INTERPORT SWIMMING.

BHANGHAI'S VICTORY.

ميت

THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 107, 1913.

The mail yesterday brought the Shang- hai papers containing reports of the final day of the Interport Swimming contente On August 30th. We take the following from the NC. Daily News:-

A CLOSE FINISH.

Not for a long time has Shanghai been so interested in swimming as on Saturday svening when the Inter-Polo Gala between tho Settlement and Hongkong was brought to a conclusion. The building was slowded from end to end, and throughout the greatest enthusiasm prevailed. Feel- ingran very high, especially towards the close when with only the water-polo gerad remaining Hongkong was credited with 27 points and Shanghai 24 The polo game carried with it seven points.

The Hawaiian Band, from the Carlton Café, was in attendance, and the bath, in addition to being beautifully decorated the shallow end with the flags of the two with lanterns and hunting, was draped at

contesting ports.

AN UNFORTUNATE INCIDENT. Only one unfortunate incident occurred to mar that proceedings, and that was in the 440 yurds Interport Championship. C. J. Cooke, of Hongkong, finished two lengths earlier than he ought to have done through being misinformed of the remain- ing distance that he bad to traverse. The mistake is not easy to understand, as the competitors. should certainly have been clearly informed by the officials of the exact number of lengths they had to cover. One of the judges suggested that Cooke raight have continued, but the Hongkang maan had lost pride of place to Borthet and it is not so easy as some people imagine for a swimmer to give up in a long distance race, and immediately afterwards pick up the stroke, much less make up Just ground.

The race was somewhat shorn of interest by the fact that J. C. Finch, of Hongkong, won with all the case imaginable, and furthermore that only he and R. Berthet, the Shanghai representative, finished. N. H. S. Alves, Shanghai, took the water, but gave up at the completion of the fourth length. But for Cooke finishing at

the wrong moment it is very unlikely that Shanghai would have been placed. How ever, Finch finished a full length, nhead of Borthet, his time being returned at Onîn. 6sces.

The Interport Lean race over one length gave Shanghai a most decisive victory, From the very outset the Settlement swimmers were always in the lead and when F. V. Fetherstonbaugh and J. C. Finch ontered upon the final length, the former had at least three yards start and he-won-by-about five yards. The time was given as 2min. 13sccs., and if correct it works out at an average of 10secs, per man, truly fine sprinting for this part of the world.

THE POLO GAME.

Intense excitement prevailed when the polo came out, for a win to either side would secure the coveted flag. Shanghai refused to divide the points in the event

if the scuring was equal at the close that the game should be replayed on a future dato. Some difficulty was experienced in securing a referee, and with the mutual consent of Hungkong and Shanghai, Mr. J. Y. Walsh was asked to adjudicate. It was net until less than thirty seconds before the close that the issue was decided, and then Shanghai with a wonderfully THEine rally secured their third and winning goal.
