CHINESE SEAMEN CHARGED
WITH MUTINY,
AN INTERRUPTED VOYAGE.
THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 4TH, 1913.
The story of a mutiny on the high seas was related at Liverpool on the 8th ult., when charges of mutiny were preferred against 14 Chinamon. The mutiny was alleged to have occurred during the voyage of the Nerman Monarch, a Glas gow steamer, owned by Messrs. Itaeburn and Neret, between Hamburg and New Orleans. Three of the men were also third charged with nesaulting the engineer and the boatswain,
Mr. Hyslop Maxwell, barrister, for the prosecution, said there were 37 hands on At the steamer, 15 being Chinamon. New Orleans there was trouble with the Chinese firemen, and when the vessel was four days at sen after leaving port. Engineer Macfarlane went below with his watch and, according to custom, drew n quantity of oil from one of the tanks. Objection was rised to this for some reason by the donkey-man, Ah Pow, who tock a spanner and struck a platform

language and struck the third engineer, who was in charge of the engine-room at the time, with the spanner. Macfarlane cried out and one or two other engineore came down. It was fair to say, com mented counsel, that the engineer whe had been assailed retaliated in the pre- sores of his fellow officers by striking the donkey-man, There was a bit of a scuffle, and Ah Pow again tapped the floor with the spanner, sad in came a number of the firemen (Chinamon). The first engineer entered the room, asked-for an explanation, and took the leader of the discontents, although with sojue difficulty, to see the captain. When Ah Pow reached the bridge he had become

Then all the firemen came up and declared they would do no further work until their compatriot was released. They were in a very threaten- ing attitude and there was nothing for the captain to do but to release Ah Pow. When he went down to the stokehold Ah Pes passed the chief engineer, used strong language towards him, and threat- ened to strike him. The third engineer he kicked in the stomach.
