NOTES AND NEWS.
Mr. Chamberlain, who has entered upon his seventy-eight year, is the sole survivor of those who were in Mr. Gad- stone's 1880 Cabinet at its Grst formation, But before the Gladstone Administration come to an end in June, 1886, two others who still survivo had entered the Cabinet. One of these was Sir George Trevelyan, who became Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster in 1884. The other was Lord Rosebery, who, after serving in several subordinate Ministerial positions, finally entered the Cabinet as First Commis- sioner of Works at the same time na Sir Georgo Trevelyan,

The Berlin Medical Association has reported that the well-known investigator- of beri-beri, Dr. Max Moszkowki, shares the contention that beri-beri is an assimilation disease and that it is caused hy the use of rice. Dr. Moszkowki: carried out an experiment upon himself under the supervision. of Professor Casperi, of the Berlin Physiological Institute, and for 138 days subsisted almost entirely upon rice. All the symptoms of beri-beri manifested them- selves. At the close of the experiment an injection of serum containing an extract of rice resulted in complete recovery within a short period.
An interesting step has been taken by the Sydney City Council in the direction of providing free golf for the people.
links laid by New
fun in recente la beautiful City suburban resort known as Moore Park were officially opened by the Lord Mayor of Sydney in the presence of a large number of golfers and the general public, The links are very fine, and are located in perfect golfing country. The Sydney Council is the first municipal body in. Australia to provide golfing facilities for the general public, and in doing so has followed the excellent lead of the New South Wales Government, which recently laid out apendid golf links at Mount Kosciusko for the benefit of tourists.

The public was surprised at the fervent declaration of religious belief with which Mr. Pierpont Morgan's will began. It almost appeared that he regarded his faith as a thing so real, not to say tangible, as to be transmissible by legal Certainly it was fundamental process.

Graphology, or the practice of deducing character from handwriting, has attained a greater rogue on the Continent than in England. In France it is studied with scientific zeal, and forms the subject of articles in grave periodicals. M. Louis Vauzangea
Hi directed has graphological researches to the hand- writing of famous musicians and has arrived at various conclusions, in the Journal des Dehats characteristic of the musician is his im- pressionability. His handwriting is more agitated than that of other artists and writers The tendency to enthusiasm is more evident. The imagination of the musician is large and beautiful. possesses the critical sense, intuition combined with deduction, adaptability and energy, tenacious patience, and sweet, amiable, open manners.

the terminus of a series of railways which
the Belgians are building so as to link up the navigable stretches of the Congo. Most of the work has, in fact, been done. The whole of the African Lakes region has important trading prospects, and it is believed that the new route will prove a great attraction for tourists.
M. Marc Langlais, a Parisian analyst, has been amusing himself by washing oney in fixed quantities of sterilised water. He took, on an average, a cubie centimetre of the water used in each case, and he found that a bronze 10-centime piece left 760,000 bacteria, 3 per cent, of which was mouldiness. A silver two franc pice left 180,000, mouldiness supply- ing 1 per cent. A gold twenty-franc piece yielded 220,000, The coin least tenacious, of microbes was the nickel 25- centimes, which left behind it only 140,000 bacteris. Travellers will not be surprised to learn that all these figures pale into insignificance beside the results.
