PROSPECTS OF THE PANAMA CANAL
PRESENT TRANS-18TUNIAN TRAFFIC.
THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS, FRIDAY, AUGUST 22ND. 1913.
In view of the ponding completion of the Fanama Canal, the following figures of Panama and Tehuantepec trans- Isthmian traffic may be of interest. The total trafic of the two routes for the fiscal year 1013 are valued at 132 million dollars, as against 21 millione in 1007, 42 millions in 1908; 62 millions in 1909, 82 millions in 1910, 108 millions int 1911, and 141 millions in 1912. Tho decrease from 1919 in said to be due to a large reduction in the value of sugar sent from Hawaii to the eastern const of the United States. The west-bound traffic figures for 1913 are, on the other hand, five million dollars greater than those of 1012, Of the total traffic of the two routes daring 1913 75 million dollars' worth passed from the eastern coast to the western coast of the United States and Hawaii, and 19 million dollars' worth to foreign countries; while 30. million dollars' worth of products of the Pacific coast und Hawaii moved eastward to the Atlantic and Gulf ports of the United States and 5 million dollars worth to foreign countries.
In 1008, the year before the Tehuan- topeo Railroad was opened, the Panama Railroad carried only six million dollars* worth of goods. The larger growth has been in the west-bound movement, the total west-bound traffic from the Atlantic and Gulf frontage of the United States having been 13 million dollars in 1907 and 87 million in 2013; waile the castward movement from Hawaii and Pacific coast ports of the United States was eight mil- lion dollars in 1907 and 443 million in 1913. For this the Tehuantepec Raroad bas been mainly responsible. Its west- bound freights were valued at six million
