THE POLICE FORCE.
As has been said before, the police force has behaved with great discretion and ability during the late trouble and deserve great praise for their work. They are just now doing excellent work undoing the Warm that has been done during the fighting and keeping order in the place in a way that would do credit to any Europesa fores. They have been scour ing the city for bad characters and have been successful in preventing the thieves and robbers that fucked into the city during the trouble from doing any damage,
HIGH TIDEN,
The river has been phenomenally high, higher than it has ever been in the memory of the oldest residents, and quite a lot of discomfort has been experienced. The water was over the Shamten buud right into the Central Avenue in the evening and the Chinese bund was under 3 feet of water. Crowds of trees have been blown down by the gale and the telephone wires are lying on the streets in many places. Neither telegraph, telephone, train nor steamer service are working and Canton is completely isolated. This afternoon the 7.15 trein from Kowloon arrived about 2 p.m. after many steps, and found on the way, most of the country So far none of the steamers
