SIR EDWARD CARSON IN IRELAND.

LONDON, August 6th.

Sir Edward Carson inspected 2,000 Volunteers at Monaghan and addressed an open-air demonstration.

Interviewed regarding the rumour that a warrant had been issued for his arrest,

he declared that he had infringed nothing either of law or morality. His advice to Ulster was quite consonant with the Statutes, of England.

SERIOUS QUARRELLING" AMONG THE TROOPS.

OVER FIVE HUNDRED REPORTED KILLED.

Fighting on a considerable scule took place yesterday evening between two Divisions of Trxips at Sha Ho, outside the East Gate at Canton, and a message received late last night said it was reported that upwards of 500 had been killed. Another inesange said that Chan Wing Wa, the Chief of Police, had again sought- refuge on the Shaineen.

Our Canton Correspondent, who supplied us with the information relating to the mutiny printed below, sent the following startling intelligence by way of postscript:--

"Since writing my letter the position has entirely changed. It is rumoured that there will be a battle sooner or later between the First and Second Divisions, It seems that a great mujority of the First Division are in favour of appoint- ing Cheung Ngay Kune as Acting Tutuh, whilst So Sun Cho is the nian of the hour with the troops of the Second Division. The soldiers am ready to fight at any moment and if any fighting should happen at all it will be in the Yintong district. Both Cheung und So are anxious to secure the acting Tutulship, and it is said that, although nominally the title is Acting Tutuh, they really are struggling for the permanent Governorship. The position is very grave indeed. General Lung has not shown any signs of coming to Canton, though it is believed that he is well aware of the gravity of the situation"

The noteworthy feature of this struggle is that So Sun Cho, who is a trained

military oficer, is a supporter of Yuan Shih Kai, while "General" Cheung Ngaw Kune, who was until quite recently a bill collector employed by a Canton newspaper, supports the rebel cause. The former reported his appointment to the President; the latter did not.

The latest mail news from Canton is given below in communications from two correspondents.

CANTOR, August äth. There las clearly been almost no sympathy in the morenient and the people who are reputed to have been in the movement have had their hands forced in some way or other. The merchants and commercial people have said distinctly that this has been essentially a military movement and has had no sympathy with the people, and the way in which the news that Chan had gone away and that the prospect of a borbardment of the City was removed has shown clearly the public opinion on the matter General Lung is said to have been so well informed of the position of affairs in Canton that he knew that the best way to take action was to do as he has done and sit quiet waiting for the bubble to barst from mide.
