PRINCE OF WALES A PRISONER.

ROYAL SCOUT TRAPPED AND DISARMED BY ENEMY.

RESCUED BY RED PORCH.

HERMITAGE, BERKS, June läth... It was at 2.30 yesterday that the Red force, to which the Prince is attached, left Oxford by train for Hermitage, whence they march and fight their way to Mitebell Camp, near Aldershot.

The Prince travelled third class, just like the other privates, and in camp e will share a tent with other privates and have no servant..

And his marching kit is just as heavy and just as meagre as everybody else's.

Four companies of infantry represented the Red Army, and I had the privilege of accompanying them. from Oxford and sec- ing at close quarters the exciting events: of the day which led to the Prince's capture by the Blue Army, and his subse- quent resene.

A large crowd, consisting mainly of women and children, gathered at the station and quickly recognised the Princo as he marched almost at the rear of his company.

The men were halted, and, standing rasy, spent the time talking in groups.

One old lady who was at the back of the crowd elbowed her way forward and tried to pass a policeman.

Do let me see the Prince," she said. The policeman pointed him out to her.

"Oh, doesn't he look a tear!" she exclaimed.

In the United States of America activity was presumibly restricted to some extent by the incidenes of the Presidential election with its attendant uncertainties as to the future policy. In Europe there were recurrent labour troubles, notably the great coal strike in England; and untimely rains in the autumn damaged agricultural produce throughout & large part of Europe But throughout the world all obstacles were submerged and all deficiencies obliterated by the flood of prosperity. One of the best indications of trade-activity is activity in ship- building, and in 1919 this was unpre ented. The movement of world's prices. was upwards, and Sauerbeck gives 85 for 1012 against 20 for 1011. The price of cotton, Middling Amorican, rose from 5.11d. to 7.11d. per lb; but that for boot sugar declined from 148. d. to 9. 3d. in the face of a large beet crop.

The companies were re-formed and marched into the station, where the men the Frince included-took their meats in third-class compartments. The officers travelled first-class.

Hermitage was reached at 3.30, and as the mon were lined up on the platform a motor-cyclist brought news that the enemy were in force on Bucklebury Com- mon, about three miles away.

..

The Prince and another private were immediately ordered to act as scouts for the main Red force, and, carrying their rifles at the trail, they hurried off up the road in the direction of Bucklebury.

The Prince set the pace. Although the sun's rays were very powerful and there was very little breeze about, he walked exceptionally fast in his anxiety to come in touch with the enemy,

He kept his eyes well open, and now arid again asked people he met if they had seen any of the Blue force-men with white bands round their caps.

A boy riding a bicycle passed. The Priven called to him and questioned him closely. The boy was full of information, He told the Prince that the enemy wore about a mile away.

Go and tell the officer with the troops coming up the road be quick," said the Prince, and the boy, who had no idea that he had been talking to the son of the King of England, rode rapidly on and told the news to the main Red army.

An order to advance was at once given The Prince and his comrades sprang up and pushed forward but, knowing the enemy were near, the Prince was very cautious, and took cover under trees every now and again.

He could see no sign of the enemy. A Red motor-cyclist deshed by. They're in front," he shouted.

No more fighting for you to-day.". exclaimed the captors, who had no idea at the time that their prisoner was the Prince of Wales. Then they served the other scout in just the same fashion.
