ties of a writer's style of speech and thought. Most people who had dabbled in
verse had at some time or other conceived A overwhelming desire to compose a collective series of parodies. But very few and fortunate had been the men who had found an adequate event to hand. Such an occasion presented itself to the brothers James and Horace. Smith, authors of Rejected Addresses "a col- lection of verse-parodies that had no equal in the history of literature. Their oppoOT unity was offered by the re-opening in 1812 of Drury Lane Theatre after its destruction by fire. Similar opportuni- ties, and of one of those he tried to take advantage in 1896, were offered by a vacancy in the Laureateship. Пlis friend. the late St. John Hankin, writing for Punch, conceived the idea of alleging the discovery of manuscripts in the hand- writing of various poets; to his admirable collection he gave the name "Lost Master. Another friend, the Rev. pieces." Anthony Deane, was inspired to re-write. our familiar nursery poems in the respective styles of certain modern poeta: his excellent imitations were published under the name "New Rhymes for Old.""

One of the greatest difficulties of the parodist was the choice of a right object. Ridiculo was an essential of parody, and not every kind of work was a + object for ridicule. Reverence might seem a strange quality to require of a parodist; yet it was an instinct of the best of them. The true paradist would not burlesque a a work of deep and sacred poem or moving sentiment, such as Tennyson's "Crossing the Bar," though such might seem to offer themselves an easy prey. And for a quite different reason he would not parody any work that was humorous. in the best sens. To ridicule it would be a breach of that professional etiquette which prescribed honour even among thieves, De Quincey, in his delightful treatise on "Murder as a Fine Art," laid it down as a principle that you should never murder a really bad man, as your victim might him elf at the time have been compassing the murder of somebody cle.
