MRS. PANKHURSŤ,

THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS, WEDNESDAY, MAY 28TH, 1918.

The following character sketch of Mrs. Pankhurst, the ruling spirit of the militant wetion of the Suffragists, may be found interesting. It appears in the current issue of Truth:

When the late Dr. Pankhurst died, of worry over women's suffrage, he left behind him various effects, among them a widow in robust health, with three rivacious daughters, who, like cher young folks, chiefly desired to have at good time, whether at Paris or elsewhere. The family was not endowed with super- wbundant fuere, and as some calling had to be arlected they decided to adopt, first reziste births and deaths, and, later. 100 mußte of agitator, in which

lul compation the whole teio have achieved undeniable efficiency. Gifted with the knack of arousing an audience to enthusiasm for noble canses, or more briefly with the gab, they gradually emerged from the asserity of Man- chester and blossomed forth in Trafalgar Square-the dowager arrayed like a duchess, and her daughters dressed like debutantes. Innocent young things, they were, as simple in soul as in drapery, While swaying the mob, they swayed themselves, and no one who has witnessed the performance will ever forget, the graceful and gyratory oscillations with which thuse slim and maidenly figures twirled and twisted in rhythmic obedience to the flow of unpassioned rhetoric.. The alliance with the Pethick-Lawrences placed the crusade on a sound business footing, and by the year 1906 the family uf Pankhurst had achieved the fame and other rewards which dog the footsteps of sacrifice. The only problem thas remained was how to keep the comedy going.

CAQAINST THE OLD FIRM.

The mischief was that in the suffrage circus there were pirendy established certain old-standing and respectable firms of jobbers and dealers, Mrs. Fawcett, for instance, had for years done a steady if quiet business in votes for women- among her clients being Cabinet Ministers and others who did not object to a flutter in these speculative counters provided always-that the bargain was carried over on Parliamentary settling daya, Also there waa Lady Bamford Slack and the Women's Liberal Federation-not to men- tion Lady Betty Balfour, who, despite the hammering of her friends in the Tory Government, still pursued with Lord Robert Cecil the modest activities of an outside broker. The fear was that a susceptible Cabinet would be wheedled

1900 onwards, therefore, the Pankhurst group proceeded to bear the stock with an ingenuity which it is impossible not to admire. If the

issue was to be placed at all they and they alone were to get the brokerage. And in the meantime they were supremely To content to levy 7 per cent. or thereabouts upon contango.

BAGGING THE CABINET.

The war with the bulls was waged with feminine pertinacity. Sir Edward Grey happened to be the most honest suffragist in the Cabinet, so his meeting was first

selceted for interruption. C.B., as Prime selected for unter to give the vote, so his door-knocker was rattled until he sought relief in the churchyard. The House of Commons was just on the point of an overwhelming division in favour of the suffrage, when the Ladies Gallery broke into uproar, and the Speaker in disgust refused the closure. The new Prime Minister, tactfully suppressing his deepest convictions, promised facilities and free decision of the House, only to be told within twenty-four hours that be was a scoundrel. Mr, Churchill, woned to the cause by a charming wife, was promptly pursued to Dundee by a lady with a dinner bell, and insulted in his tenderest spot to wit, his peroration. Mr. Lloyd George undertook to Lime- house the crusade, only to find himself howled down at a Liberal caucus, and battered to bits in Camberwell; while ón the third occasion, when he set out to extol Queen Elizabeth and Florence Nightingale, he nearly had his eye gouged out. When the suffrage depended on the Nationalist vote, a hatchet was hurled at Mr. Redmond and a theatre full of Dublin Hibernians, the most sacred of a sacred race, were threatened with lighted cottonwool and paraffin. Shops where ladies squander the money of their helpless husbands had their windows smashed. Girls writing love letters to ontangled-swains had their missives domu. with treaclo and acid. Last, but not calculated and incendiarism, least, avowed, was visited upon churches, race- stands, golf-greens, and tea -kiosks-the very institutions which explain the measureless glory of the British people-- particular attention being devoted to the

suburb,

where Hampstead garden Suffragists chiefly reside, Mr. Pank- hurst thus set herself to bear the suffrage, and, by all the gods and little fishes, she has done it. The act result to date is £14,000 paid to her-war-chest at a single Albert Hall meeting and a cause utterly

You cannot understand Mrs. P. with- out recognising frankly that what the wants is not a victory over inen, but i victory over Mrs. Fawcett. It is her own sex that she is determined to trample upon. Mrs. Pethick Lawrence was dis-

Any one joining the WS.P.U. must submit her private judgment absolutely to the Pankhurst clique; no committee or general meeting has any effective voice; things must be wisely ordered as long as the Pankhursts do the ordering, and the things the chattels are merely other women, Mrs. Pankhurst may thank her stars that she has not to submit her tantrums to the verdict of twelve average matrons.
