FUTURE PROSPECTS OF THE MINERAL INDUSTRY.
THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS, SATURDAY, MAY 1Örn, 1913.
Ninety-eight per cent, of the total out- put of the mines of Formoes, writes Amo- rican Vice-Consul J. W. Bullanting, Tansui, comes from the Prefecture of Taihoku, in the extreme north, The re- maining 2 per cent. represents the output of a petroleum well near Byoritsu and a coal mine in the same vicinity, Beams of coal, however, and petroleum have been discovered in many places all the way to the southern extremity of the island, but no effort at exploitation has yet been made, On the cast const ulso many valuable deposits have been discovered, notably of gold, in the region inhabited by the Taroko savages. There is no doubt that when this region becomes pacified and settled further valuable discoveries will be made. Mining in Formosa must, therefore, be said to be still in its infancy. In 1911 Formosa had the following mines:-Gold nine, gold and copper one, placer gold 27, coal 270, petroleum welis 39, sulphur "18. Their output was valued at:-Gold 1,009,500, silver $32,525, cop- per $264,613, coal 8468.367, petroleum $2,813, sulphur 399,950. The mining in- dustry employed a total of 5,017 workers, most of whom were engaged in coal mining
The wages paid ranged from c.al a day for malo Japanese to c.11 paid to female Chinese inhourers.
GULD, SILVER, COPPER AND SULPHUL. The value of the annual output of the gold mines of Formosa is over one-half the total value of all mineral products. There are at present more than 20 gold mines in the island, but of these practical- ly only three are productive. In many of the mines nothing is found but quartz- ose, which contains little gold, and in others iron pyrites have been mistaken for gold ore. The three productive mines are a little way east of Keelung, and are

The production of placer gold is decreasing, amounting to $25,000 in 1911, as against $300,000 in 1902. Pincer gold is found in the Keelung River, in the vicinity of the Three Gold Mines of Keelung, along the seashore on the north const, and along the Mokka Kivor near Karanko on the east coast, but the bulk of the output comes from quartz deposits higher up in the mountains, which terri- tory is now inaccessible owing to the presence of savages. Copper and silver are produced in conjunction with gold at the Threo Mines. The amount of the production of both metals is gradually increasing. Sulphur i found only at Hokuto and Kimpori in the north. The mines are in the hands of an English firm, Tait & Co., of Daitotei.

STUDIES.
At a meeting of the Corporation of the City of London recently a letter was read from Lord Cromer, chairman of the Oriental Studies Committee appointed by the Secretary of State for India, relativo to the proposed School of Oriental Languages. Berlin and Paris, he said, already possessed such a school. London the metropolis of the Western Power with great interests in the East had none. An admirable site and buildings (the London Institution in Finsbury-circus) had been secured the now school, and the Government, which recognized the Imperial value of the scheme, had pro- mised a substantial annual contribution towards the coat of maintenance. But an additional sum of £10,000 per annum would be required if the school was to be established on a basis adequate to the needs which it was intended to serve, and Lord Cromer felt sure that the object one which would appeal to the generosity of the Corporation.
The letter was referred to the Finance Committee.
AN AVIATOR'S DEATH IN INDO-
Coal is second in value among the mineral productions of Formost. There are 15 seams of coal extending from the north coast to Toen and Shinchiku Pro-was fectures. There are four varieties, anthracite, black-brown, and two varieties of brown. An assay of the coil produced at the Denryoku mine shows 54.28 per cent, combustible matter, including 4.10 per cent, sulphur, 4.30 parts water, 38.08 per cont, volatile waiter, and 3.28 per cent, ash. The specific gravity is 111. There are indications of petroleum veins all over Formosa. Some 300 wells have been dug, but the only one that is actually productive is the Slinkkoku well, owned by the Hoden Oil Company. The others consist of dry wells, wells producing little oil, wells producing only gas, or wells on trial. Although considerable capital and energy have been expended in trying to induce & flow of oil, results have so far been unsatisfactory.

At a meeting of the Provisional Conneil of the British Empire Trade Mark Association, which was to be held at the House of Lords, in Committee Room 0. on April 23, Lord Balfour of Burleigh was to move the following resolution :-
That inasmuch as a great difficulty in the way of identifying Imperial and national productions, as such, tica in the want of protection of marks of origin and collective marks in the countries of the world, this association urges his Majesty's Government to endeavour, through the medium of the International Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property, to secure such protection at the earliest possible moment.” The resolution was to bo secunded by Mr. Robert Thompson, M.P., and supported by, among others, Sir G. Croydon Marks, M.P., and. Mr. D. Veraon Pirie, M.P.

WEI-HAI-WEI.
Wei-hai-wei is already beginning to preen itself in anticipation of the summer season, The Wei-hot-wei Gazette of April 26th expects that the influx of summer visitors this year will beat all previous records, already overy available house and all the reoras in the Island hotel are booked, and although considerable accom modation has been recently added to the latter, the demand is still in excess of capacity, and a goud many will be unable

SALARIES OF STAGE STARS.
A writer in a Home paper in an article the Stage protests against what he terms the uneconomic payment. stars." He says: ----
of
Take u few concrete instances. A young actress, of great personal charm and small experience, playing leads' at a well-known theatre, is paid ninety pounds a week. A light comedian, withy as admirable but circumscribed talent, recently asked a hindred pounds a week. The heroine of a symbolical drama was last year paid a hundred, and twenty pounds a week, and the leading man vas paid two hundred. A vary mediocre, but extremely handsome, actress, who is near- I always unemployed, declined a recent offer of Birly pounds a week, and pre- tended to regard the suggestion as an insult. Two hundred and fitty pounds a week is the salary of one musical comedy comedian. A talented actress, soon far too little on our stage, owes her rare engagements to her demand of a minimum of a hundred pounds a week.”. And so on, and so on,.......
The whole thing is preposterous. It is strangling theatrical business, and it is making the production of plays of artistic, value, impossible. That it is preposterous is proved by the fact that however overpaid are the players, the theatre remains empty unless the play attracts the public.
