to draw the attention

the Lords Commx of the Treasury to the circumstances of prior

unexpended duties

which will require

their Lordships consideration

and decision. In his Despatch

2017 of the 8th of May, and especially in the Report transmitted from the Treasurer,

has

the Governor furnished upon the deficiency noticed

by the

Commissrs of Audit in the

accounts

Accounts of Hong Kong, such

explanations as the local Govt

can afford. And Lord Grey

having

deemed it right to

request Sir J. Davis also to furnish any information in

his power

on this subject,

Copy is enclosed of his reply,

upon which Lord Grey

thinks

it only due to Sir John Davis to observe that it appears to

show that he had executed

no Public Works which had

not been regularly authorized, and that he had managed

the large accounts which passed through his hands

in a

manner

much

to give satisfaction
