ii March 1849.

4. The estimated demand,

to be submitted to Parliament,

then stood as follows:

Ordinary Services, £38,900

Public Works, £20,000 £58,900

5. On the other hand,

the amount of Ordinary Revenue was assured from

the actual Revenue for the

Calendar year 1847, as it

appeared in the Governor's

Despatch No 11 of the 14th

of January 1848, at £31,078.

The best guide to expected

Revenue was held to

be the actual experience of

the past year.

And inasmuch as there appeared on the face

of the accounts to be

a Balance in hand, Lord Grey

considered that it would

be justifiable to apply

for the annual Grant

to Parliament without making

allowance for that Balance.

It is true that some reason

had appeared to apprehend that at an earlier period there must have been some

confusion in the Colonial Accounts. Whilst the Gov. had for some years reported

a Balance in Cash, annually,

the Board of Audit in

England had latterly viewed the

Colony as largely deficient.
