ATOMIU DIBINTÉGRATION DECOLLED BY ROCKS. "Halo" is the name somewhat curious ly given to sorne mystifying spots that have been long noticed by petrologists in biotite and certain other iron-containing minerala. Describing these spots recently at the University of Birmingham, J. Joly showed that they are darkened spheres, very, numer ous in some rocks, and always very minute about 1-090 to 1-700 of an inch in diameter in biotite, the dark brown mien, but of different sizo in other minerals. Each sphere proves to have a nucleus, which is usually a crystal of zircon. This mineral contains more than the average amount of radium, and as the size of the spheres agrees with the theory, it ie concluded that the spots are a result of radioactivity. The alpba ray, or helium atom, is projected at a rate varying according to its source-though perhaps 12,000 or 15,000 miles a second. The length of its path in different sub- stances depends on the atoms encountered, and the length calculated for biotite is the same as the radius of one of the halo- spheros Halos are produced by other rays, their sizes being different. No halo spheres are known in recent rocks, and there is evidence that they have formed halo in with incredible slowness, a Devonian granito-porhaps 50,000,000 years old-appearing to have had a formation rate of one ray per year! All halos seem to have resulted from rays of the uranium and thorium families. A striking fact brought out is the stability curved horizontal ribs, with bottom re of the common elements from the earliest.inforcing bars built up inside the shell, geologio time, as atomic change seems to have been confined to these small spots and waterproof ecment on the outside and inside builds up the total thickness of the or halos of vare clements..
