THE ROYAL BETROTHAL
THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS, TUESDAY, MARCH 11TH, 1913.
DECLARATION BY THE DUKE OF 'GUMBEYLAND."
It stated that the marriage of Trinca Bruen Augustus of Cumberland and Princess Victoria Luise of Prussia will probably take place towards the end of October.
The Duke of Cumberland has written a letter to the Guelph political leader, Baron von Schiele-Schelenburg, announc ing the news to "the loyal Hanoverians. He adds that it is his prayer to God that the marriage, which will be a marriage of affection, and which has the approval of the parents of the Prince and Prinocas, may redound to the happiness of them both and of both theic Houses. It is now stated in inspired articles that the Duke of Cumberland could not be expected to change his attitude and renoune hig claim to the Throne of Hanover. It is indicated that he has made a suficient concession in allowing Prince Ernest Augustus to join the Prussian Army, and, as a Prussian officer, to swear allegiance
to the Emperor King. The inference in that the Regency of Brunswick will, for the present at any rate, continue without change.
The Times has the following leading article on the subject-
The English people have learnt with real pleasure of the betrothal of the son and heir of the Duke of Cumberland to the only daughter of the German Em- peror. As a nation, we combine much real sentiment-though we are na absurdly ashamed of it as we are of some other good qualitics--with our practical characteris- tics
So do our German neighbours; perhaps the combination is part of our common Teutonic inheritance. A love- match between young, people appeals to all classes amongst us, and are we not Komi-officially informed by the North- German Gazette itself that the engage ment between Prince Ernest Augustus and Princess Victoria Luise is a love-match? The Emperor and Empress, we are assur ed, have granted their only daughter her beart's desire. That cannot always be done in tamilies so exalted, and the Emperor's grandfather, it is well known, as a young man sacrificed his own dearest wishes to the commands of his father and the duties of his high estate. But when Princes and Princesses are free to follow their own natural inclinations, there is no doubt that their marriages excite deep inrest and sympathy amongst the people. in all countries where marriages of affection
regarded with favour. When, as in the present caac, the union is as desirable for political reasons, na it is for personal reasons, the conditions are ideal The match is then what in less exalted circles is called "suitable," and the families of the bride and bridegroom are to be congratulated only leas warmly than the youthful pair themselves. The betrothal, is twice blessed, because it practically closes in the happiest mauuer an hereditary feud which is older than the present German Empire. ⠀⠀ The quar- rels of the fathers and grandfathers are reconciled in the marriage of their descendants. It is Romeo and Juliet with a happy ending-such as at least one version of the Itahan novel has and most people, after all, like romances to have happy endings in real life as well as in story-books.
Bre
The relationship of both the Prince and the Princess to our own Royal Family and the long historic connection of Eng- land with Hanover, and in a less degree with Brunswick, deepen the interest which the engagement would have possessed in any case for Englishmen and English- women. The great-grandfather of Prince Ernest Augustus of Cumberland was the fifth son of cur King George III. He exercised for same years a great influence

semed not unlikely that he would succeed to the Throne. Ernest Augustus, fate assigned a tragic lot. Blind from his early youth and bred up in the absolutist views which both his father and mother held, he conceived that principle the honour obliged him to side with Austria in 1868. The Hanoverian Scound Chamber and his adviser Zimmer- maan warned him against this course. He was quite unprepared for war, and after saving the honour of their arms his troops were forced to capitulate to the Prussians.
