After preliminaries had been settled, and the referee had announced that he would declare the fight off if he discovered any dirty work, time was called and the fight began. Grant immediately got into close quarters with the professional and used his powerful right-vigorously, swinging it on to his opponent's jaw in the second round and bringing him to the boards. Cordell took a breather, and then faced the sailor Hercules again, cleverly evading bis sleep-laden gloves. But Nobby" made the pase so fast that the American, clever as he was, could not avoid his stinging right, which alternated between body and head, and the marks on Cordell's ribs bore testimony to the strength behind the blows. In the seventh round Grant wes still foreing the fight, his opponent elad- ing him with professional coolness and tact, and watching his chance, which was not long in coming, and which made all the difference to Grant. The sailor opened Cordell's eye with a straight right, but was shortly afterwards staggered by a jolt, on the jaw, from which he had not recovered when the gong sounded. This was the turning point in "Nobby's" chance. He come up fresh in the succeed- ing round, and fought with the same bull dog grit, but the sprightliness was mise- ing: and he could not stare off the persistent Cordell, who, in his cool and collected way, was doing much effective work with both hands, and running up the points, until, at the end of the fifteenth round, he was declared the winner. The decision was received with uproar, but, to be fair, it could not have been other- wise. Grant put up an excellent fight against a veteran pro, hut it ended,
