The demand for foreign steamers seems to continue unabated in Japan. A recent report states that six Kobe shipowners have contracted for the purchase of elaven foreign steamers, aggregating about 50,000 tons. Delivery is to be taken. this month. Most of these steamers are being registered at Dairen. At the end of January it was stated that 40 steamors, aggregating 80,000 tons, had been regis tored at Dairen.
In a return issued last month the Liver. pool Underwriters' Association estimates the total cost of casualties representing claims for £10,000 and upwards during the past year at £0,000,000. Of this amount £5,705,000 was represented by casualties to steamships and £355,000 by casualties to sailing ships. The total "estimated loss compares with losses of £5,140,000 in 1911 and £6,817,000 in 1910.

The company's defence was that the stranding was due to perils of the sea. The company had delivered three fists of documents, but it had appeared in the course of the Board of Trade inquiry that the captain of the steamship Deli had steered the same "course as on a preceding voyage and corrected his compasses from the corrections made on the preceding I voyage and entered in the log-book. The applicant was entitled to have that log- book produced as well as other important documents, which had not been disclosed.
Lord Justice Humilton asked whether there was anything to make the log-book of a preceding voyage a material docu-
ment.
Mr. Lewis Noad submitted that there was. Mr. Justice Scrutton had not stated [his reasons for refusing the application, and be had also refused leave to appeal.
The Master of the Rolls said they would like the opportunity of seeing Mr. Justice Sorutton, and that the ease had better be mentioned again at 2 p.m.
When the case was mentioned at 2 p.m., Lord Justice Hamilton intimated that he had seen. Mr. Justice Scrutton and that the Court saw no ground for granting the application.

THE CONVICTS' VESPER.
To the annual report of the Howard Association just published, Mr. Thomas Holmes contributes an article on Sunday in a London prison, and refers to the vesper hymn sung in the prison chapels. There they were on their knees singing a
