ON THE CHINA-TIBET FRONTIER,
The little walled town of Chone, on the Amdo-Kansu frontier, is the sent of government for a vast area of outer Tibet. The town is clustered at the muurh of a gulley formed where two ridges of bills meet. Here resides a prines, who nominally rules over forty-eight clans, though in the minds of the people he is second in importance to the Tammsary, which stands outside the wall an higher ground above the town.
This lasery contains buildings in excellent repair, and when viewed from a distance the whole place strikes the traveller as dis tinctly ornamental. There are some 500 priests in residence, and no event in the lives of the people eit be undertaken unless the priests have found the day propitions, a matter sometimes expedited by generosity towards the diviner. 16 is amevisat notable fact that the priests In this monastery have their own printing press for the production of the Buddhist "Bible."

One famous chieftain with whom became acquainted is Aco-che-zo, who held sway in a district fifteen miles from Tao Chow Old City. He has had a lively career, to indge by the sword scars on his hody; but, when relating his adventures, the old wou usually remarks that the hot- bloaded days of youth were responsible for most of them. He is now.established on a farm, which brings him a comfortable living, and is much sought after in cases of dispute, as he is believed to be very fair in dealing with all legal questions pertaining to the elans. His physique is still splendid, and many younger men have caus2 to fear his powerful arm. Some time ago a foreigner presented him with-a

The sou kindness was also offered by several other men in this district to missionaries in Western Kansu, an invitation being given to reside in their territory until more peaceful times. These folk make implacable enemies, but when disposed to be friendly show the greatest kindness and consideration to foreigners.
