TORTURED BY BULGARIANS,

AMAZING STORY BY MR. ANGUS HAMILTON.

BOUND TO A WHEEL.

Mr. Angus Hamilton (who for a short time in 1910-11 was connected with Hong- kong journalism) returned to London from the Near East last month and told an amazing story of his capture and tor- ture by the Bulgarians. He was acting as war correspondent with the Turks for the Central News when he happened accidentally to ride into the Bulgarian lines, and was taken prisoner. His state. ment is as follows:-

"I had been captured between ten and eleven in the morning, and about two I was fed past the halting-place of the off- cers of the 36th Infantry, where I was stopped and questioned. The escort's explanation that I was being taken to the quartier-general by General Popoff's orders was not sufficient for the colonel commanding, who ordered me to dis- mount.

"Before I could comply, I was seized by a nuinber of people and dragged from my horse, a revolver was held to my face, a sword to my throat, and my arms were twisted behind my back. I was again searched, and asked for my revolver and papery. Everything I possessed was taken from me, the colonel himself going through my pockets with a delicacy which suggested that I might have been a thief caught red-handed in the act of commit. ting some crime.

"The conversation was pointed and personal, and was conducted in French, German, and English. I was called upon to explain what my papers meant, what various pencil-marks on the map which I carried indicated, and why I was wear- ing Turkish uniform. I explained that I was not wearing Turkish uniform, but the ordinary shooting kit of an English- man, but this protest elicited nothing more satisfactory than a tightening of the ropes on my arms.

STRAPPED TO SADULE.

"When this little scene had continued for some considerable time. I was warned that 1 was in peril of my life, and that if I attempted to get away I should be shot. Then I was ordered to mount my horst, my knees were strapped to the Baddle, and my escort was increased to six, one of whom, an officer, rode behind me with a loaded revolver pointed at my [back'

The party failed to find the quartier general, and at nightfall Mr. Hamilton was taken back to the bivouae of the off- cers of the 30th Infantry. He says:-

"I was at once told to dismount, and to sit upon the ground, where my knees and ankles were bound with ropes, and. the whole wearisome business of ascer- I was ex- taining my identity repeated. amined, cross-examined, and re-examined, liar, repeatedly told that I was threatened with death, and regaled with stories of Turkish inefficiency, cowardice, and demoralisation, and with epic narra- tives about Bulgarian bravery,

Some three or four hours passed in this way, during which I frequently asked that my ropes tight be loosened, to the end that my hands also were bound, asked for food, but it was refused; I asked for a drink, it was refused; and when the offcers round me had taken their evening meal and were dispersing to their various bivouaes, the officers of the 36th Infantry took me into a small tent, no for the best part of an hour submitted me to an experience which I never with to have repeated.

The ceremony was prefaced with the statement that if I would confess to tens a Turkish officer 1 should be given a com fortable bed for the night and a good dinner. Not being able to comply I had necessarily to submit to the treatment which followed. 7 was made to stand

up, my arms were twisted behind my back and bound, while an offer with a drawn revolver sat just behind me,

STRIPPED OF CLOTHING.

In front of me were other officers who goonded to strip me and to examine my skin dany dy generally for the marks which would rage that I was a Turkish officer, or, failing that. a British officer assisting the Turks. Without being able to go into the details of what gened in the tent, I may say that it a proved beyond doubt by a Red Cross man who was present that I was a true Constan- tinople Turk."

My clathes, my fez, my arm bandage inscribed in Turkish characters, Corre spondent of the Central News, were of course direct evidence of my Turkish origin, and the officers now proceeded to go through my papers, which comprised a passport with photograph attached from the Foreign Office,
