THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS, TUESDAY, JANUARY 7TMm, 1913.

MR. J. A. DELAY'S DOUBLE LIFE.

DECEPTION IN THE DIVORCE Couns..

The tangle of mystery beginning with the disappearance of Mrs. Nowill from the Atlantic Hotel, Newquay, on Satur day, November 23, becomes more amaz- ing and complicated orery day.

The latent information that has come into the possession of The Daily Mail throws a strange light upon the life of that secretive mai, James Arthur De lay, the retired Singapore solicitor, who was found hanging by his braces dead. in his bedroom at the Atlantic Hotel thirty-six hours after the disappearance of Mrs. Nowill, whom he referred to in his will by which he left the codicil to "!

her £30,000, "my friend Marian Nowill.

Delay was ever a man of mystery to all who came in contact with him. He was thought by all to be mornse, or quiet and eccentric. No one felt he really knew him; no one did. "We met him two years ago in a P. and O, boat when going to Egypt," said Mr. Nowill, at the inquest. "He was a very recentric and reserved ma11." Another visitor at the Atlantic Hotel described him as "a merose sort of man, who never said Good morning! to

anyone.

After Delay came to England he led a abrange averet life, saying little or nothing about himself-a mystery to everyone. But it is now clear that with is gilent manner and his secret ways, he was a man of strong passions, a careful, painstaking schemer, who led not merely a double life but several different lives.

IN THE DIVORCE COURT.

His friends and relatives were surprised on learning of his secret passion for Mrs. Nowill; his friends and relatives were astonished to find after his death that he was married--that he had been married for thirteen months. But the most amaz- ing secret that he kept from everyone, ex- cept one woman, was the fact that he se- eretly passed through the British Divorce Court in 1910-1911, under a false name, by his relatives, his frienda, his solicitors. without his identity being suspected either or; above all, by the wronged husband. It is only in the last few hours that this knowledge has come into their possession.

The story of how Delay won the affec tion of a woman who was supposed to be leading a normal happy married life without any suspicion reaching her busband in one that would seem incredible if told in a work of fiction.

Delay became associated with a Mra. Young when, only he and the know, but Secretly the two met probably in 1909.

when or how often this steret man has succeeded in hiding from everyone. At the same period in that year, or very early in 1910, the woman agreed to give up her husband and home and throw in her lot with Delay,

entirely by was alviously not one dictated and sceret manner that he would take the concerned. He had decided in his deep woman from her busband and marry her. Yet he did not desire that anyone but she should know who had inflicted the wrong. upon the husband. So with quiet deter mination and painstaking care, he evolved a scheme, which his legal knowledge.

WOMAN'S FLIGHT. Arthur Daly, of unknown occupation: and address, was to be the man who had stolen another's wife, and he was to con- tinue to exist only until James Arthur Delay could return to his eld world. This appareatly impossible task Delay carried out without anyone knowing.

When Delay's plans were safely laid the woman Hed from her astonished husband's house, leaving behind her a "1] am letter to her husband stating:

am going leaving you for ever..... away with the man I love with all in heart and soul.

Up to the moment when he received that letter the husband had no idea that his wife was particularly friendly with any man or even had any friends unknown to him. She apprently, was never away from home unaccountably, and there was nothing in her manner to cause him the slightest suspicion that all was not well.

Never since has the husband seen the wife except for a brief moment in a London street, and who the man was for whom she had left him he had no idea until a day or two ago.
