Crile at the New York Clinical Congress, harmful associations like fear and dread are avoided, and the patient recovers in bet ter condition than when the old method is used, and without unpleasant after- effects. The patient is first put to sleep with ether or chloroform, the brain cells being thon further cut off from harmful stimuli by the use at the point of opera- tion of a local anaesthetic-novocain, quinine and urea hydrochlorate being preferred. Very remarkable results have been obtained, and it is claimed that brain cells after an operation have a perfectly normal appearance, in striking contrast with the condition shown after an operation under a general anaesthetic alone. With such lessening of morbid effects, it is declared that the deaths following surgical operations must be greatly reduced.
