HEADACHES.

The Cause and Remedy.

THE HONGKONG DAILY FLESS, SATURDAY, JANUARY 4TH, 1918.

Sick and Nervous Headaches are but the symptoms of other ail ments to which they are merely 'sympathetic, such as Indigestion,

They are a perfect Blood Purifier and a positive and per manent cure for Biliousness, Indiges tion, Constipation, Headaches, Sallow,. Complexion, Liver and Kidney Troubles, Piles, Blotches, and

all Femate Ailments.

Biliousness, Constipation, or some other irregu- larity of the system. Many women habitually suffer from Headaches, which make life a daily purgatory. Indeed this complaint may be regarded as peculiarly an affection of the feminine sex, an ailment common to all women from girlhood to old age. If men suffered from Headaches as women do, business would be at a standstill, but the truth is that a woman's headache is generally due to womanly causes.

Dr. Morse's Indian Root Pills get at the cause. They aid the digestion and assimilation of food, cleanse the system and purify the blood, and are a positive cure for sick headache, biliousness and stomach disorders.

BOMBING SURGERY OF ITS TERRORS: Inanoci-association annesthesia," as explained by Dr. George W. Crile at the New York Clinical Congress, harmful associations like fear and dread are avoided, and the patient recovers in bet ter condition than when the old method is used, and without unpleasant after- effects. The patient is first put to sleep with ether or chloroform, the brain cells being thon further cut off from harmful stimuli by the use at the point of opera- tion of a local anaesthetic-novocain, quinine and urea hydrochlorate being preferred. Very remarkable results have been obtained, and it is claimed that brain cells after an operation have a perfectly normal appearance, in striking contrast with the condition shown after an operation under a general anaesthetic alone. With such lessening of morbid effects, it is declared that the deaths following surgical operations must be greatly reduced.

LIGHT OF THE ANITES. With the nower conception of matter, we are passing through the age of electricity to the subtler age of electrons, and Sir William Ramsay tells us that progress in future will consist in acquir- ing the power to control and direct in the motion of electrons. He considers that the actual existence of electrons in motion has been conclusively demon- strated. The electron is: the negatively- charged particle or corpuscle, only about one 1,830th as large as an atom of bydrogen; and ав the size of the hydrogen atom is fairly known, the mass of the electron can be computed. It is inconceivably minute, however, as it is expressed by four-fifths of a gram divided by a number made up of 1 followed by 27 ciphers Electrons in motion are negative electricity; and they also constitute a form of matter more elementary than most of the elements metals, in fact, being compound bodies, with one component consisting of one or more electrons, as a rule not very firmly attached. Non-metals also are made up in part of aleetrons less easily detached. In the combining of elements one or more electrons are shifted from the more metallic to the less metallic element; and it may become possible to give elements atructural forraulae showing the relation- ship in position or directed motion of the true clements and their attached elect- rons. In its double meaning, electricity may be an assembly of electrons, station- ary or in motion; or it may be waves in the ether, produced by the stopping or starting of electrons. The motion off electrons is one factor of electrical? energy, and wave-motion in the ether is made to generate electrical energy by using the waves to move electrons.

HEALITY OF ELECTRONS The remarkable light that frequently appears near the summits of the Chilean Andes-sometime resembling the zodia cal light but showing quivering flashes during the great carthquake of August, 1906 is explained by a late Chilean writer as due to silent electrical dis- charge. The great rarity of thunder-1

storms seems to confirm this view,

POWER MEASURES OF PRECISIONĀ The kilowatt as the chly unit of power measurement after 1913 was lately pro-} posed by German electrical engineers– In all publications the U.S. Bureau of Standards already uses 0.746 kilowatt as the squivalent of a horse-power, giving the latter the standard or exact value of 550 foot-pounds per second at sea-level in

UNION OF YEAST'S.

Various plants and animals live in a mutually dependent companionship in pairs of species. This curious condition, which is known as symbiosis, has been lately noticed in yeast fungus, and a German biologist has succeeded in getting yeast that give better results when two kinds are cultivated together than when either one is used by itself.
