work was taken up, would very much decrease; he thought that, possibly, the capital expenditure for the year after this would be somewhere about £25,000, and it would drop in the following year, in all probability, to about $15,000. The estimated cost of the crop they hoped and expected to harvest this year was Is. 2.01d. per lb., f.o.b. That meant a saving of rather over 2d. per lb. on the cost of the year under review. (Hear, hear.) Up. to date they had secured 310,668lb. of rub- her, and they had sold forward 400,000lb.. or 208 tons, at an average price over 1913 of 48, 5d. (Cheers.) The amount of rub- ber secured for November was 79,714lb., which was a record for them. It went against 34,874lb. in the corresponding month of last year. He thought that that was an indication that their estimate of 900,000lb, odd would be secured, and he hoped to see it touch 1,000,000lb. (Cheers.) At their last meeting he estimated the profits of 1911-12 at £60,000, and they had secured £72,000 odd. For this year he mentioned £07,000 but under

THE RUDBER INDUSTRY.
Although he saw that he was described ' full-blooded optimist" (laughter) -which was no worse, at all events, than being called "a buccaneer from the Welsh D (renewed laughter)—yet re- mountaina viewing all that he had said at that meet- ing and other meetings in regard to the rubber industry, he had nothing to regret and nothing to withdraw. (Hear, hear.) It was a good many years before he had satisfied himself thoroughly on every ques- tion and every point which he considered had had a bearing on the prosperity of the industry, but he settled satisfactorily those questions for himself, and, having done 50 he had felt justified in putting. his conclusion before every one with whom ho was associated. He was satisfied that they were all going to do very well, and that the present position justified, the very strongest optimism. (Cheers.) In the prospectus of the company they estimate for the first four years for a profit of £77,000, and they secured a net profit of £82,000. In their fifth year they had now £72,500, with the certainty before them of very much larger figures in the years to follow: The dividend now suggested brought up the total distribution so far to. 76 per cent., and as he told them in January, 1900, that the first year in which they could hope to harvest anything like & crop of rubber was 1910-11, when they harvested 218,530lb,, he did not think he had misled them. He told them also in January, 1909, that he believed that the increased consumption of the world would absorb all the cultivated rabber and all the wild rubber that would be put out at & price which would not necessitate their sacrificing very much of their profit. He was laughed at a good deal at the time, because in 1909 there were some people who thought they would he giving their rubber away for nothing at all in 1912: he did not, however, think that those people had studied the possibilities of the industry quite as carefully as he him

THE QUESTION OF SOUTH AMERICAN
COMPETITION,
He had been asked by a good many English, Continental, and American shareholders what ground he had for thinking that South Americs could not compete with plantation rubber if thore was any fall in price. There were many reasons such as the collecting of the wild product over a large scattered area, and the cost of transport both of the goods and of the food supplies; but the main thing he had had in his mind really was not covered by those objections, but was largely a question of exchange. That had a very important bearing on the matter, which he proceeded to explain. If a country had the monopoly of a certain product which the outside world must buy eventually, the outside world paid the Government the profit, and that was exactly what would have happened if they had not started the plantation industry in the Middle East. Brazil and the federated Malay States to-day had no monopoly, but the east of exchange in re- gard to those countries was really borne. by the producers. They would meet the South American competition easily, and, unless the price of rubber was going to rise considerably, he did not himself see that there was the slightest shadow of a chance of the Brazilian industry increas ing its output to any great extent. afterwards made an earnest appeal on behalf of the fund which was being raised for the London School of Tropical Medi cine, and stated that as the company had a prosperous year before them he intended to suggest to his colleagues that the com- pany should make a suitable donation to the fund. He concluded by moving the adoption of the report, and accounts.

At & meeting of the Trust in July he ventured to give some figures, because he know there were a great mumber of people interested in the industry who suffered great nervous shocks. (Laughter.) Of course, it was difficult to estimate the world's production and consumption of an article like rubber, but, they had always been accustomed to do it in regard to tea, and therefore he had endeavoured to do it in regard to rubber. He gave the figures in July of the possible consang tion of rubber in the world during this year he had those figures now up to the end of October, und, estimating for the last two months, they worked but very closely to what he had put them at-only rather better. The net result was that his estimate in July of 103,140 tons would work out at 108,250 tons. As regarded the world's probable production, as against his estimate of 91,000 tons, the actual pro- duction would be 94,700 tons. He had not given any estimate for Guayule or
