Fuh-Kion, who was one of the preachers, made the interesting statement. that in Japan, Formosa, Korea, China, Siam, British Malay and the Dutch East Indies --with a population approaching five hundred millions-there was only one Christian in every 250. The Bishop took pride in the fact that though the Christian Churches were small they had been re- cognised as one of the chief religious. forces at work. His points relating to China wore that the leaders of the new order of things had given remarkable testmony of their friendly attitude towards Christianity, and that some of the leading members of the Government- were Christians. There was now in the Chinese Empire an "open door" for preaching the Gospel such as had never

been known before, and so far as they could judge the Chinese Government was likely to welcome the aid of efficient Christian missionary work.

A HERO ESWANDED.

An act of gallantry in the Yangtze Gorges in November, 1911, has been re- called by the conferring by the King of the Second Class upch Mr. Arthur Han- son. The London Gazette records that on the day in question-November 13-a number of houseboats containing foreign rofugees-from-Szechuan were proceeding. down the Yangtze river and in one of the gorges encountered a strong wind blowing against the current, with the result that several boats were caught in a dangerous whirlpool. The boats were brought out of the whirlpool by the efforts of those on board. with one exception. This boat, with her rudder broken, drifted about in a perilous position, and the occupants, consisting chiefly of women and children, were in grave danger, Mr. Hanson was on abore some distance away, but at great personal risk he awam out with a rope tied round him and succeeded in attaching this to the boat, which by this means was safely pulled to land.

ÁN ENGINEERS' ASSOCIATION. With Mr. Douglas Vickers as president,. the British Engineers' Association has considerably developed since its incor- poration last April under a Board of. Trade certifiente. The purpose of the association is to promote the interests of China. British engineering firms in Already it comprises the principal ea- gineering firms in Great Britain who will receive confidential reports, based on valuable first-hand information, on the subjects which affees engineering interests in China. In the forefront of the pro- gramme is an endeavour to make the British Government, the banks, the ship. ping companies and everyone else con- cerned realise that it is their duty to study and promote the interests of British manufacturing engineers. The association considers that when the British Govern- ment either lend money or sanction the lending of money to China, especially when a considerable portion of that money is borrowed from the British manu- facturing engineers theinselves, there should be a clause in such loans to the effect that the engineering plant pur- chased with such money shall be had from Further, the British manufacturers. Association holds the view that British banks should follow the policy of the banks of other nations in regarding a sound engineering contract as a negoti able asset.
