PHOSPHORUS STARVATION,
HOW IT CAUSES NERVOUS DIBONHEES.
That phosphorus is an absolutely noces- sary foore health of the nervous system most people know. What they do not know is that it is equally necessary for the health of the blood, a fact insisted upon by Sir William Gowers, one of the greatest physicians living.

THE P. AND O. REPORT..
APPOINTMENT OF MANAGING DIRECTORS.
The report of the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company for the year ended September 30, slates that after providing for the insurance claims, which were exceptionally heavy, the sur- plus, including £67,617 brought forward, stands at £307,141, as compared with £410,916, including £67,182 brought in. After deducting the amount of the usual interim dividends paid in May, and reserving three months' interest on moiety of new stock issued, the balance admits of further payment of 2 per cont. on the Preferred and 6 per cent.

It is, therefore, easy to understand that when, from any cause, anyone is unable to obtain his full supply of phosphorus from his daily food, his nervous system will be affected, and he will suffer greatly. The symptoms due to this lack of phosphorus, or sphorus starvation, are exceedingly varied, and uffvet differ-Deferred stock, together with a hamus on the latter stock at the rate of 5 per cent. ont people in different ways.
The distribution for the year will there. foro be equivalent to 10 per cent. on the capital of £2,320,000, the capital called up being only due for full dividend next year. The above payments will be made after setting aside altogether £406,101 to the credit of depreciation roserve and carrying forward. £67,760.
Among them are sleeplessness, trencher- ous memory, depression of spirits, great lassitude, constant fatigue, cte.
Everyone who suffers from nervous symptoms any assume that he has phos- phoras starvation to a greater or less degree. He may still suffer in this way although he is taking his usual diet, the reason being that his digestive organs, being weakened, cannot extract phosphorus from his food as they used to do. Under these circumstances, what he needs is a food rich in phosphorus in such a form that it can be easily absorbed. It is, however, essential that the phos phorus must be chernically combined with some food material, for the digestive organa cannot use phosphorus in ita crude form.

ADDITIONS TO THE FLEET.. The Ballarat and Bellana, two steamers mentioned in the last report as built for the Cape Australian line, are now both At work, and the directors have since pon- tracted for three sister ships of this class, with the names of Benalla, Berrima, and Borda. It was also mentioned that two steamers of the "N" class for the China intermediate service were in courge of being built, and these two vessels, the In this connection that distinguished Nankin and Novara, are now employed medical author. Dr. C. W. Saleeby, this service. HOW TO CURE NERVOUS DISORDERS.
In discussing the best food for supply ing this phosphorus, hò states:-"It has been proved by a large number of acienti fe experiments that very nearly the whole (93 per cent.) of the phosphorus added to the diet in the form of Sanatogen is absorbed."
Many other doctors have written in similar terms of Sanalogen's value. The Medical Timer states: Sanatogen has a markedly restorative effect on the nervous system."
Another medical journal states: No preparation offers such opportunity for phosphorus assimilation as Sanntogen, No preparation has been attested and investigated so persistently and a exhaustyt

class, intended for the Indian service. A contract has been made with Messrs. Caird & Co. for a mail and passenger steamer of nearly 12,000 tons, especially designed for the Bombay line, and the name of Kaisar-i-Hind has been selected for this vessel. These contracts amount altogether to 95,000 tons of shipping. ` `No regular annual charge by way insurance premium has been made in the accounts for many years, but it is pointed out that the annual claims, which are for the most part moderate, are debited as they occur, and that it has been and might be advisable again in a year of bad trade to have recoures to the reserve fund in order to maintain a reasonable equili brium in the dividend. Fortunately, in the present year the profit and loss account is able to bear the heavy insur ance loss of £179,748, accruing chiefly from the disasters to the Delhi, Oceana, and Persia,
