THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS, TUESDAY, DECEMBER 1åre,

SIR HENRY MCCALLUM ON

ST. ANDREW'S NIGHT:

At the big St. Andrew's Dinner Colombo, the Governor of Caylon, Sir Henry McCallum, attended in spite of his doctor's orders. During the time he was present he managed, in defiance of physical difficulties, to make a humorous speech. Eliminating the sections relating to Ceylon and Ceylon affairs, wo quate thome passages that touch on Scottish nationality and the exceptionally fine character of the Scot as he is found in | Ceylon and clowhere:---

THE GOVERNOR'S WITTY SPEECH. II.E. the Governur, rising to reply, was loudly cheered. He said:-Noblo Chief and Britisher Scots, as Mr. Gosling has just said this morning, I thought I would not be able to attend this banquet. The doctors ordered me to stay away, but I was determined to come, and it has been a case of mind over matter. I am afraid, however, that although on ordinary occasions my voice generally reaches to the end of any room, on this occasion you will find that I am suffering from an abnormal amount of hoarseness and, if my voice does not penetrate so far on this occasion, I know you will forgive me. I must in the first place say that in addressing you here an British Scots I am committing a bit of a fraud. (Laughter.) Although both my parents were Scotch

MY BIRTH WAS A MISFORTUNE.

(Laughter.) My misguided parents, without consulting or considering the com- ing baira, dumped me down in the land of the Sassenach, and it was not until I was over 14 years of age that I went north of the Tweed to that earthly paradise, the land of the Sent. You will therefore quite understand that words such as Bubbly Jock and Kebbuck and Trimlin' Tam are names with which I not familiar. (Laughter.) I

A

sympathise a great deal with the Sinhalese fireinen, who have lately heen examined by the Railway Commission, who eay that, although they have a perfect knowledge of English, they are unable to understand the jargon which falls from the mouths of the Scotsman. (Laughter.) However, I have, as far as I have been able, tried to make up, and have still tried to make up for past failings. I was Governor of one of the South African possessions at the time of the war, brought out my only son and put him As a trooper in the Scottish Horse.. (Cheers.) He fought during the war and obtained a commission in the Highland Light Infantry after the war. (Cheers.) And within the last four days I have had a telegram to say that he has beca appointed Adjutant of the Septtish Horso. (Great cheers.)

My successor, if he does not already know it, will find that in Ceylon was

THE TRUE GARDEN OF EDEN. The first man was a Scotsman and he wore asporran Eve also wore a sporran, but,

I

ed her sex, she changed it for frills and furbelows made out of the beautiful leaves of the breadfruit. He will find that there is a legend that when they were turned out of the Garden of Eden and were crossing the Mahaweli Gauge Eve sang Will ye no come back again." (Laughter.) He will find Adam's ale, was then the harmless bevetago toddy, (Laughter.) And if he comes from the Straits Settlements, as possibly he may, he will not be surprised at that, when as he will know that there toddy is regarded as su innocuous as not even to be considered as an intoxicant and does not pay under excise laws as light beer or porter to which it has sometimes been compared. He will know as in the days of Adam and Eve toddy could be brewed in the back garden,, and that it could sometimes be consumed in barrels full without any deleterious effects. At that moment it was made at a tavern at Cain-dy (Kandy), which was called after their eldest son. (Laughter.) But the

day's work, with a mammoty over his shoulder, took a simple draught of toddy, lost his self-control and hit poor Ahel over the head (Loud laughter.) There is another local record of these early days and that is that Esau sold his mess of potage to Jacob, and that that mess of potage was haggis (Laughter.) We were not surprised that anybody would sell their birthright for that mess of potage. Those of us to-night who have seen what reverence was paid to that tasty dish would feel there was always a great future before baggia. Its consump; tion gradually spread to the west until in the reign of King James the Fifth a Frenchman introduced it into Scotland to become the most fashionable and national dish. At the same time toddy found its way into Scotland (laughter) but they did not like it, and thought it resembled lemonade too much, so they invented a new beverage called usque bagh, or the water life, and it has been regarded by the hardy Scots since as ag innocuous and harmless beverage (Cheers.) No doubt whisky and parritch have been the foundations upon which the Scots and Scotch families have lived, thrived, and obtained honour and distinc- tion throughout the length and breadth of the world. (Cheers.) Mr. Gosling and Sir William Mitchell have referred to certain traits which are common to the two countries. They have left out one. vory important trait, and that is

and excessive sobriety, caution, canniness, energy with perseverence, you have found the Scotsman always bob up serenely on the wave of life whatever the sort of weather, with dignity and credit to him- self and honour both to his mother and his foster mother. To-night in different parts of the world we find meetings such as this in honour of our patron saint, but I guarantee that in no part will be found such a fine, good looking, steady, splendid fot of Brotsmen as are here to-night. (Cheers.) If there is a look of anxiety and worry it is only because that very important item, the purchasing power of the bawber, is gradually assuming microscopic dimensions.
