In doing myself the honour of addressing your Lordship on the subject which I am about to bring under your notice, I trust your Lordship will pardon the trespass and attribute it solely to the true cause, namely, my great desire to continue in Her Majesty's service.

In December 1846, at the request of Sir John Davis, then Governor of Hongkong, conveyed to me through my Uncle, the late Lord Colin Campbell, I left the Calcutta Bar, when I was in very fair practice, to occupy the post of Attorney General at Hongkong in the absence of Mr Stirling on sick leave. I held that post from December 1846 to the end of November 1847, when I was appointed Acting Chief Justice on the suspension of W. Aulmes, and I am still Acting Chief Justice.
