· French tobacconists, who are chiefly women--the widows of State officials, or of naval and military officers, of firemen, ete--who sell postage stamps, and their number is larger than that of the post offices pure and simple, have just had a grievance removed. There was recently revived an old regulation whereby the keepers of these shops were only par |-mitted- to renew their stock of· poatäge. stamps every other day, and the regula tion has been rigorously enforced. The ahopkeepers felt this to be a distinct grievance, and appointed a deputation to wait on M. Chaumet, the Under-Secre tary for Posts and Telegrapha. After hearing their complaints, M.-Chaumet- promised to rescind the regulation, and the débitants de tabas, or tobacconists, can in future replenish their postal stocks every day, but only at fixed hours, to be decided by the local director of posts
