UNMARRIED MEN PREFERRED.

A lady writing in the Malay Mail on the difficulties created by preference being given in a number of appointments to unmarried...then makes the following interciting comments:-

A man who has his firm's business bo attend to cannot be bothered with the hundred and one trifles that spell economy in the house. His servants get extrava-

fort, He pays more than he ought for

self, because he has little or no ides of food value or quantities. A few cents more or less in his daily expenditure do not matter so long as he gets peace and comfort in his leisure hours. An income that would need careful management for a family is easy living for the single man, it is due to the large proportion of bachelors in this country that married people find it so difficult to keep their expenditure within reasonable bounds. The single men set the pace. They affect the standard of wages. Several bachelors living together can afford to pay unres aonably exorbitant house rents. Their home life being devoid of interest, they have established various clubs for their amusement and pleasure, which they expect the married man to support also; and many other side issues might be instanced to show that their salaries in the past have been more than aufficient for the requirements of single men, and would, probably under proper control, have been quite enough for a young married couple, just starting in double harness with youth, hope, energy and affection to tide them over the rough places. Nevertheless, like the wearisome honk, honk of the nightjar still Unmarried sounds the old refrain,

a lot We hear roch preferred." of talk about "racial suieide,' and Church and Government alike con-

Of course spire to blame the woman. But if they would look more deeply into the question they would find that the blame lies, not, there but with all ranks of employers of labour everywhere, who are guilty of giving preference to the single man to the exlusion of his equally capable married brother, My husband and I came to this country some years ago in defiance of the warning contained in the usual little tagtail, and we have never regretted our venturesomeness. We do not set ourselves up to be cleverer than www 8 bma other folks. What we have accomplished, others can do. A salary that is poverty to one person is wealth to another. It decide.

THE DEVELOPMENT OF TSINGTAO

Lecturing before the German Asiatic Society in Berlin recently on the subject of East Asiatic Railway Phans and Tsingtao," Admiral Z. D. V. Flans therefore are at present under consideration. The journey now takos 14 days by the Siberian railway to Dalny, and thence by steamer, but soon even this one day's sea trip will be no longer necessary, The traveller will be able to go via Mukden and Tientsin to Tainanfu by the Tientsin-Pukow Railway that is shortly to be completed. Here he will-change-on to the Shantung Railway, which will carry him direct to Tsingtao. When the railway line that is to go east- wards from Lake Baikal vid Kiakhta to China takes its northern portion to Tsingtao, then that place may become the For this it chief port of Peking, possesses a number of advantages-great depth of water, freedom from ice, and safety from typhoons.
