THE FREIGHT MARKET.
Mesars.. Lamke & Roggo, of Hongkong, in their intest freight wireular, say:
The
During the period clapsed sined writing our last circular the froight market has been steady throughout the fortnight, and while only a moderate wlue of business has been done in chartering the shortage of tonnage for prompt and forward delivery is still making itself felt. The greater portion is represented by coal fixtures, and, as far as Japan freights are concerned,, those were accepted either by the regular liners-part- cargoes-or by the small vessels recently fixed on timecharter for delivery down South, in order to bring them into position. North reports that trade there is still very brisk and premises to continue so for some time, in spite of the near approach of the closing of the Northern parts for the winter SAIGON-HONGKONG.-After teceipt of news that the crop in Canton and in the interior has been spoiled to a great extent by drought, local rier prices advanced consider ally, and regular liners were able to obtain as much as 18 cents per pical Rice exports during this season amount to total 13,664 tons as compared with 632,807 tous same perind last year. Quotation stands for December January shipment 35.63 per picul f.o.b. Saigon.

OLA Chor-Saigon reports that there has been practically no demand lately, and were it not that the greater portion of Cochin- China paddy left for export has been stocked by dealers de to hold the market up, it is not a drop of 90 ecats per picul anly that we would have seen, but a complete collapse.

The fact of the Government having raised THE AUSTRALIAN ORIENTALA
the prohibition to export paddy from Cambodia has made the situation for these holders more difficult.
NEW CROP.Latest reports from certain districts tend to alter the first favourable outlook. It would appear that owing to excessive rain de one time, transplanting operations had to be suspended. Caltivators: did not, however, count on the very sudden dry weather experienced, and the monsoon having changed those who delayed trans- planting see how their plants withering.
SAIGON-PHILIPINES. There inquiry after tonnage, but we have not heard of any fresh chartering resulting Rice prices at during the last fortnight. Manila have gone down very much and most dealers refuse to entertain business, being afraid of the action of the Government, who had some 100,000 pivals in store which is deteriorating and which with have to bo thrown on the market soon.
