ENVIRONMENT AND GROWTH.
The success of the garden city plan for the families of English workingmen was recognized two or three years ago by Parliament, and aid is being given to the building of ideal, suburbs around Liver- pool, Manchester, and other cities. The influence of those homes on child develop- ment has been quite astonishing. Henry Vivian, ex-member of Parliament, states that the average child of sevon is thres inches taller than the average child of the same age reared in the crowded city, and at 14 the average difference is ve inches in height and 30 pounds in weight.

BEES, AND FRUITS.
From the experiments of C. H. Hooper and F. Chittenden, British horticulturists, it is estimated that 80 per cent, of the pollination of hardy orchard fruits is dono by the hive bee, 14 per cont. by the various humble bees, and the remainder by miscellaneous insects. Gooseberries, currants and raspberries, though freely self-fertile, set better fruit when visited by bees.
A DRUG-BURBANK WANTED.
Though much attention has been given to the introduction and cultivation of
medicinal plants, it appears that their improvement has been almost wholly neglected. In a paper read before the Indiana Academy of Science, F. A. Miller showed that the propagation, cultivation, collecting and curing of Hydrastis have been subjects of Government experiments, but the great variation in the alkaloids contained-from 2.79 to 7.00 per cent. in few months-has boon overlooked. During 15 years of cultivation near Indianapolis, the drug burdock gained only in the first year-a result attributed to the use of seed from wild plants only. The superiority of heavy seeds has been proven, and it has been calculated that on a certain three acres of burdock planted this year the exclusive use of beavy seed would have raised the yield of 33,890 pounds to as much as 40,668 pounds. Such important drug plants as kenbane and digitalis could doubtless be much bettered, with the production of a uniform proportion of active alkaloids. Seed and plant selection, the isolation and testing of promising varieties, hybridization, and adaptation of soil and climate, are yet to be tried, and offer great promise.

OXYGEN IN METALS.
A possible cause of many mysterious failures of metals and alloys has been pointed out to the British Institute of Metals by E. F. Law. The oxides often contained are neglected in chemical analyses and overlooked in mechanical tests, but may do much harm. The pre- sence of the oxides, in many instances known, have caused serious troubles, such as the fracture of copper fireboxos, failure of bearings, etc. The corrosion of metala especially is affected, and this should be given much consideration..
Even platinum may be volatilized, and Sir William Crookes finds that at 1,300deg. Cit loses one per cent, of its weight per hour, Palladium loses 0.007 of ita weight; iridium, 0.008; bat with rhodium no less has been detected. The loss of iridium is due to the production of a very volatile oxide. Below 900deg.
there is no loss of these metals.

SAFETY GLASS.
The strengthened glass of recent French experiments consists of a thin sheet of celluloid between two layers of gelatine, each covered by a sheet of glass. Perfect adhesion is given by submitting the whole to houvy pressure. The compound glass is perfectly transparent, and when struck a heavy blow with a hammer, stone, or other object, is simply cracked locally, with no fying about of sharp-fragments Sucit glass should lessen injuries in accidents to automobiles, railway cars, etc.
Putting sentiment aside, P. G. Mitchell, in his British Association address, urged that every effort be made to preserva the present small remnant of our wild animals for the sake of useful human knowledge, for zoology is the science of the living thing. Instead of a destroyer, man must now be a protector. original purpose to make the menagerie a means of introducing new animals for human use has failed, and there is known no important addition to domesticated animale since the remotest antiquity, The list has been increased simply by a fox birds, chiefly ornamental.
