LEAGUE CRICKET..

THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS, MONDAY, NOVEMBER 4TH, 1912.

KOWLOON C.C. D. CRALOENGOWER- 0.0.

This league match was played at Kowloon on Saturday, with the follow

With the advent of November comes the official beginning of winter. Thicker tini- forms are now being brought out, and the thin smoker clothing is beingrid aside for dw months, But the wintering result can only be said to have officially begun.

a

The Chinese have always had the periods for changing their costume re- gulated for them by fairly strict codes, but with the changed conditions which now obtain in the republic and the want of unanimity which has resulted in the mat- ter of clothing, it may be inferred that the Chiness will in future put on their thick- er clothing when they feel cold and not before. The calendar will not be such a taskmaster as it was in the days that are Bone.

In this connection it is interesting to notice that the Chinese are not so un- animous, as was announced in the first flush of republican enthusiasm, regard ing the adoption of the Gregorian calon- dar and the coming into line with the rest of the world in celebrating the first of January as their New Year's Day. The old China New Year has, too many pleasant associations for most of the people, who naturally are lath to part with a celebration which has entered so largely into their life, and traditions and beliefs.

It will be remembered that the Poking Government announced by proclamation that from the 1st of January, 1912, the old Chinese New Year should be aban- doned and that the foreign calendar was to be adopted. At the time this was issued the authorities recognised that the change was sudden, and countenanced the erlebration of the Chinese New Year at the old time, in February. Now with the approach of another year, the ques- tion which date shall be celebrated is agitating official and non-official Chinese minds. In the North the foreign banks. have giver notice that they will observe the old Chinese New Year as usual, which falls in February. This may be taken as an indication of what will generally happen for a year or two, both New Years being celebrated.

I wondered whether it was a printer's error or an attempt to Orientalise the name of the British General who is visit- ing the overseas forces that explained the rendering of his name as Bir Yan Hamilton which appeared in a Peking newspaper?

The Home papers appear to have been vying with one another of late in brand- ing the Sextuple Group as blood-suck- ing money-leaders and in extolling the virtues of Mr. Crisp, the gentleman who has cut into the business, as a champion of fairplay for China. A sufficient reply to this is continued in the Crisp loan agreement which has now been published in full. It is interesting to note that the new group is paying China only £89 on every 100. The Sextuple Group arrango- mont was to let China have the money at £98. China, seeing willing to pay dearly For freedom from foreign supervision of her expenditure..
