A CHINESE COMMENT ON THE DEATH

OF COUNT NOGE

THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS, ĬTUESDAY, OCTOBER 123P^(9)ZES

Mr. M. T. X. Tyau, writing from 7 Melbourne-mansions, West Kensington, comments as follows on the letter from Sir Valentine Chirol, published in The Times Wankly Edition of September 20th, on the subject of Count Nogi's suicide:-

The subject of suicide is both repellent and fascinating at the same time. It has always baffled the efforts of philo sophers and psychologists, and to-day its mysteries are still unravelled. despair Confucins exclaimed, "When one knows not all about life itself, how can he pretend to know about death?""

In

Count Nogi died the death of a horo; more than that, he has also died the death of a virtuous man, It is this conception of death, not draped in black, but clothed in virtuo and sanctity, which constitutes what Sir Valentine Chirol describes as a striking illustration of the gulf that divides the East and the West. Here, in the West, the motives that prompt a suicide are either emotional or economical; but in the East they are intellectual.. With the latter, the in- tellectual Ego predominates, and the very act reflects care and deliberation.

Of late in China one finds meny instances of a form of suicide utterly incomprehensible to the people of the West. They may admire it, but they I refer to the cannot understand it. tragedies of those who lamented the impotence of their, country and deplored their ability to ameliorate its condi tions. If in their lifebine they could not accomplish their cherished desires they hoped that by their death the motive of their deed might fire the imagination of their. compatriots and stir them up to vigorous action,

Rewives of The Times way perhaps recollect a remarkable ducntent publish ed in its columns three years ago and sent by your Correspondent at Peking. A metropolitan official, Yung Lin, wearer of the eighth Button, shed tears of blood over the fortunes of his country, and then, having sent to the Press a memorial for the Prince Regent in justification of his act, "sacrificed his life," in the words of the Imperial Edict bestowing upon him posthumors honours, "in order to display his patriotism." He called atten- tion to the evils besetting the adminis tration and anggested sound remedial

"I am a member of the Imperial household, and my family has been recipient of the Imperial bounty for generations. The contemplation of the dangers of the times made me sick at heart. Full of grief at what I cannot alter. I have braved death in making my remonstrance. Lacking literary ability or grace of style and knowing that the law punishes him who speaks of what concerns him not, I have decided on:

this self-slaughter. after sending in document in tear of punishment, because ny constitution is not strong enough to endure the cruel tortures of my gaolers, Iso I beseech your Highness to pity and

forgive.

My original intention was to ask ay superior official to presont this memorial. but I feared that your Highness' anger might extend to him for presenting it. Then I thought of stopping your High- -ness chariot and presenting it per- sonally, but your suite is too large to render approach an easy matter, and a call to you on my part would result in being robaked. So I decided to send it by post to the newspaper, where your Highness will be able to peruse it and act accordingly: Then I shall live though I die. Weeping, bitterly I pro strate myself and reverently hand in my memorial.".

Surely no fair-minded critic would he prepared to demounce all this as sheer hysteria, the product of a diseased brain; but whether he would comprehend it ar go a step further and endorse it, is, perhaps, a matter open to question.

According to the New York correspon- slent of the Daily Telegraph, they are believed to be the direct descendants of the following of Lief Erickson the Lucky, who went to Greenland from Iceland about the year 1.000, and later discovered the North Coast of America.

The Stefansson expedition was associat- ed with the American Museum of Natural History, and the New York authorities of that institution scenu convinced that, from the ethnological standpoint, the discovery of Erickson's descendants, made on Vic- teria Island 30deg. east of the mouth of the Mackenzie River, ranks with the dis covery of the lost tribes of Israel.

Mr. Stefansson's party has been ex- ploring for five years in the neighbour- hood of the regions at the "top of the world," and nothing they found was quite so interesting as the 2,000 mysteri- ous whites, who are still living in the Stone Age, apparently indifferent to and contemptuous of the advances in civilisa- tion made by the outside world. PRIMITIVE PEOPLE.

It was for these people (says the. Tele gragh's correspondent) that Captain Roald Amundsen, the discoverer of the South Pole, searched unsuccessfully while making his trip through the North-West Passage. While they retain some of the customs of the Norsemen who were lost from Tee land in the twelfth century, their method of living is entirely different. They use bows marle of willow, bound together with sinews, and their arrows aro tipped with flint and native copper, which is pried out of ledges or found in stream beds on the mainland. Their knives are of cop per, with horn handles, and are fashioned in much the same manner as the imple- ments rande by the early Norsemen who inhabited Greenland. Their needles are of bone.

FLOOD LEGEND.

Like nearly every primitive tribo; these people have a legend of a flood, which a long time ago devastated the world. This legend, anthropologists say, is universal among primitive tribes, and therefore cannot be regarded as a proof that this particular tribe is descended from Chris tian forefathers.
