Some of the coastwise linos have already made plans to augment their feet and increase their service in anticipation of the opening of the water- way, notably the American-Hawaiian Steamship Company, which now has a large fleet of American steamships in service between the Hawaiian Islands) and Pacific, Gulf, and Atlantic ports. This feet at present comprises 18 steam- ships whose gross tonnage aggregates 93830 tons and whose speed range from 12 to 14 knots. Contracts were warded lest autumn to the Maryland Steel Com- pany for five additional steamships each of about 10,000 tons cargo capacity, two of which are being built for the Pacific The and three for the Atlantic trade. first of these new steamship is expected to be finished next October, and the others by the time the Panama Canal is opened. The entire fleet, it is under- stood, will use the canal. When the latter is opened the company intends to stablish an additional service between
Orleans and Pacific coast points to handle traffic from the Mississippi valley, which it is believed will be attracted by the lower water transportation rates via the canal to the Pacific coast. Other coastwise, lines, although confident that the opening of the canal will stimulate

until the possible effect of the provision in the Canal Toll Bill relating to rail- roads interest in shipping is more clear- ly defined.
On the other hand, some steamship interests, which had intended to build additional vessels and increase their, ser- vice have become so discouraged and chisheartened by the Panama Canal legislation as it now stands that they have abandoned, their plans. It is an nounced, for instance, that the Pacific Mail Steamship Company will not build the four 93,000,000 steamships for the New York-Asiatic service which the com pany had decided to establish with the Pening of the canal.

NO INDUCEMENT TO BUILD ABROLD. American shipowners de not appear to be at all enthusiastic over the concessions granted to them in the Panama Canal Act regarding foreign built vessels. The measure as it now stands changes the statutes governing the registration of ocean-going vessels so as to admit to American registry foreign-built vessels which are "to engage in trade only with foreign countries, or with the Philippine Islands, and the islands of Gaum and Tutulla being wholly owned by citizona of the United States or corpora tion organized and chartered under the laws of the United States of any State thereof, the president and managing directors of which shall be citizens of the United States."
