"THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS, MONDAY, OCTOBER 14TH, 1812,
THE FREIGHT MARKET.
Messrs. Lamlo & Rogge, ship and froight brokers of Hongkong, in their circular of the 12th inst. say:-
Since issue of our lust Circular under date the 28t ultimo the freight market has continued very firm in every direction and the dileulties of obtaining tonnage are as great as ever. Regular lines haring their hands fall to supply tonnage for offerings on the borth and other owners holding their touange for prompt and forward delivery very firmly, the market is in a stronger position than it has been for years, with orary indication of rates further advancing, and it looks as if the boom-ff nothing un- foreseen up North happesis is going to continue right throughout next year. The rates owners are asking has to doult caused son.e consternation amongst charterers, and. they, realizing that, stiff rates are going to be secured by owners next years, have tüken up bonts un time-charter for a long term for prompt and forward delivery. Quite a good business has been done in time chartering down South, and we tear, that also up North some fixtures have taken place with sub- stantial advancos în rates in our instance a boat even having been taken up for a- term of 3 years which touk to strengthea rates in all trades.
SAIGON/HONG KONG ---Regule bouts are now accepting small lots-Paddynt 7 ents per piel. There is no demand for Sigra rice here, and some of the boats hayo abandoned their run for the presont - they can easily find very profitable em- ployment in other directions. Hice exports during this season amount to total 490,259 tom compared with 599,674 tons period last year. Quotation stands for Octohor shipment: 86.55 per pient o.b. against $6.50 same time last year.
Some
"SAICON/PHILIPPINES From enquiries put ca che market a couple of fixtiros only have resslted and in consequence of the light offerings of tonnage owners have been ablo to push this rate up to 31 cents for 34,000 piculs as compared with 31 cents for 30,000 piculs as paid only a fortnight ago. It is reported that the Philippine crops in most sections are Bourishing and it is believed that this will be a banner year if conditions continue favourable until, the first week in November.
SAIGON JAVA-Nothing doing.--Lotter alvieres from Rangoon state that about 16,000 tons were sold to Inva early last rabuch,
NEWCHWANG CANTON:-Only one fixture was done during the fortnight on kimpsum Jasis, the rate working out at 27 cents per picul.--Chorterers, having booked sufficient tonnage for their requirements, prefer to a. the arrival of the first non beans 'be- fore going in for fresh chartering.
TIME-CHARTERS-There was a good de- mand for prompt and also forward delivery and "fixtures have taken place at good paying ates, details of which will be found in the foxture list.
COAL FREIGHTS: Tonnage was in good demand during the fortaight, but some Japanese bants offering in the market the safe from Japan to Hongkong has slightly. declined..
FIXTURER Rerouted: Moji! Hongkong $2.20/$4.25/Xem 2,10, Walratsu/Swater 83.30/99.25, Wakamatzu/Amoy Ten 330, and Hongay! Hangay/Hongkong - $2,50 Swotow 82.50 per ton.
