SCIENTIFIC MISCELLANY.

AHEXT MUMINUM DECORATION.

The claims of sheet aluminuni for decora tive work by pinning, pressing and like shaping processes have been advanced by the British Almuirum Company. The material has decided advantage in lightness and cheapness, and a 'square foot of sheet aluminum of ordinary thickness weighs 11 pounds and costs 28 conts, while a sheet of the same size and thicknes of copper weighs 3.7 pounds and egsts 07 cents, and one of brass weigh 3.56 pounds and costs. 63-conts.: Using the softest sheets, with wood or metal chucks, the aluminum is easily spun on the lathe at speeds up to 3,000 feet per minute. The work may be polished by the ustal brass or flerman silver methods; it ay be satin-finished by a fine steel scratch. brush at high speed; and it may be frusted by dipung for a few seconds in hot caustic soda solution, then washing, and plunging in nitrie neid.

GRIGIN OF AGATES.

The banded agates so much used for various Denaments are often curiously forined as well as bountiful. They are explained by R. H. Liesegang, a German mineralogist, by supposing that patural cavities become filled with a jelly of silica, and that iron saits spread through it, pro ducing the colour-bards. He has imitated the formation of the bands in gelatine Silver containing potassium hiebroraató, nitrate being introduced at the centre, the reaction aprends outward, giving layer, of silver chroriste alternating with dear ones, the silver chromate first forming a super- saturated solution and then being precipit ated by concentration in spreading More silver nitrate causes spreading through this layer.

THE IMPROVED BLUERARY.

The blueberry onlture by the U. §. Bureau of Plant Industry has increased the size and improved the flavour of the berry that had been given up entirely to will growth. A special blueberry gage has shown enlarge nient from opening 11 to opening 15, with prospect of further gain.

CHEMISTRY OF GREAT PRESSURE. The work of the modern chemist has been subdivided and remarkably extended-by-the-... formation of artificial environments. He gets nów results by labouring in new con- dition. With the electric furnace, he has given as a chemistry of heat; with liquid air, a chemistry of cold, with improved nie pumps, a chemistry of vacua; and now F. Bergius, a German chemist, has devised apparatus introducing a chemistry of cam- pression. In this new apparatus, pressures of more than 150 atmospheres can be main- tained for weeks at a time, with tempera- tures ranging up to 300deg, or 400deg, C. This is made possible by the use of ensical joints for connections, no packing being employed, and it opens up to chemical Leffert a new hold of great possible pro ductiveness. Interesting results already records include the, interaction of carbon and water to produce hydrogen and carbon dioxide, the synthesis of calcium peroxide from caluíum exide and oxygen; and the production of artificial coal from peat and cellulose in the prosence of watek,

NEW ANALYSIS.

A novel method of chemical anlysis hy rystallography bay been brought out by Prof. E. van Fedorow, of St. Petersburg. He has determined what measurements of crystal faces are necessary to show the internal Structure, and claims to have unde ite possible to identify a vast number of substances by such measurements,

A list

of 10,000 crystalline substances of definite chemical constitution has been prepared already, with inonsurgents accurate enough for reformue. In the case of having a new OTLE of these substances to specimen af

examine, if a few crystal faces caa bo measured with a geniumeter, the data so obtained! are looked up on the table, and the substancy is recognized in a very simple way and without injury to the sample.

POISONED APPLEX.

Hitler pit in apples, instead of being a disease, proves to be a symptom of local poisoning in the pulp cells. Prof. Ewart of Melbourne, who reaches this conclusion, has- evidenco that poisonais sprays are the cause in some cases, but there are poisons at work --so far unknown-in orchards where neither the trees nor the soil have over been sprayed. Even slight traces of poisons seem to affret the sensitive pulp cells.

BILENT GEARING.

A new product that promises much quiet- ing of the noise of high-speed machinery is the so-called "Fibroi pinion of prominent British manufacturers. It is formed from h special woven fabric compressed into a solid mass under a pressure of several tans, and held together between steel flanges by The threaded sleeves or threaded studs. strength is claimed to he greater than that of leathor, paper or other non-metallic pinious. This pinion has sufficient flexibility to ensure a good hearing across the full width of the face, and at high speed it absorbs shocks that quickly destroy-iron-or. brass pinions, Soaked in oil in manufacture, it is not only self-lubricating hat is moisture-proof as well.

SEAWEED RUISER The basis of the patented rubber sub- stitute of J. S. Campbell, English experi- mentor, is seaweed boiled in ammonia. Taking 600 pounds of the seaweed, he crushes it, and boils it with a gallon of strong ammonia for about 45 heurs, or until A jelly has formed, then, after drying the jelly, he adds one gallon of resin oil, naphtha. or terpene oil. A vulcanizing, substance may be included in the misture, if desired. A glutinous or resilient binder is added, such as 25 per cent. of gutta percha, rubber wasto or other similar material; and the whole ja heated, dried and pressed. Before drying, wood extract, be tannio or other preservative may incorporated.

INVISIBLE FISH-BAIT.

A garb of semi-invisibility proves to be the fine silvery bubbles often seen clinging to the hair or feathers of birds or animals in water. Dr. Francis Ward built an observation box at the edge of a pond, with a window for looking up at creatures swim- ming, and thus he made the discovery that the amphibians were scarcely to be, seen from below. The film of bubbles reflected like a mirror the surrounding colcurs, effectnally hiding the swimmer. The appear- ance of artificial flies, as seen by trout look- ing upward, was observed, and it is said that changes in both shapo aad colour of these objects are likely to resultar.

FOUL BREATH.

WOMEN'S

GREATEST MISFORTUNE

The old saying that "distance lends enchantment" was never more aptly to the point than when applied to those people whose breath is laden with evil smelling odours. Many persons appear most attractive at a distance, but produce a feeling of pity and disgust when close to because of the condition of their breath. For instance, it makes little difference how beautiful a woman may be, or how charming her manner if her breath is foul, her charm is gone and she is at a dir- advantage when ever she comes in contact with other people. Foul breath in women arouses in man a feeling of repugnance and a desire to get out of the company of such a woman as quickly as possible, and even women will avoid her. It is therefore important for every woman who values her personal attraction to take such care of herself that this unpleasant and unnecessary complaint is avoided or corrected. Men, women and children who are troubled with this complaint will drive their friends away more rapidly than any other affliction. People do not realise their breaths are bad because they are like those who are constantly employed among paints and varnishes they get used to what is to others a most offensive smell. In nearly all cases this condition is due to Constipation and a disordered Stomach, and a coated Tongue, slight Headache, and feverishness are the sure signs that the digestive organs are retaining quantities of impurities from which the system should be free, thereby causing the Breath to become charged with the foul odour. "In Dr. Morses' Indian Root Pills there will be found a searching, cleansing remedy which will drive the masses of decaying corruption that poison the Blood and contaminate the breath-from the system through the regular channels. They get at the cause is no other remedy does. They get at the the foundation of the complaint. They give you clean bowels, a healthy stomach, a lively liver, and blood that is rich and red. They are safe, sure and reliable remedy, and will prevent many of the complaints so common if taken once or twice a week to keep, the system in a healthy condition. They are purely. vegetable, and their action is not accompanied by any nauscous or griping sensation, but is mild and gentle.
