AN ANGELIC WEATHERCOCK,
THE LATEST THING IN SCIENCE ON THE
VENICE CAMPANILE -
As everyone knows, the new Campanile at Venice is, to outward appearance, the very counterpart of its predecessor. But the interior of the new tower conceala, Bays the Frankfort Times, in its con- struction the most up-to-date achieve- ments of science. The most curious and interesting example of this is the old angel of St. Mark's, enthroned on the summit of the tower, which has undergone 我 remarkable modernisation of its interior.
It used simply to stand on its base on the top of the tower. Modern engineer- ing, not content with fixing it firmly to its ancient resting-place, endowed it with the faculty of swinging hither and thither as the wind impols it. This device will, it is hoped, obviate the dangerous effects of the wind pressure constantly exerted upon it in its exposed position.
Inside the figure has beon fixed a vertical bar, which hangs down below the roof of the tower and carries at its

There is possibly gained the additional advantage that a sudden strong gust of wind will not vent its force first of all on the top of the tower, but will begin by setting the angel in motion; but]. whether this means that the full pressure. of the wind is thereby not transmitted to the structure of the tower must remain open to doubt. The arrangements above described are from the designs of Italian Berlin firm. engineers, carried out by When the two ball-bearing systems have been built into the tower they will be inaccessible for centuries to come. The better to resist the destructive action of the salt sea breezes, thest ball bearings a special kind of have been made of bronze.
