Count Teranchi, the Governor-General, is surrounded by such unusual circum- stances that I beg your permission to call attention to it,
The story of the success of Christian faissions in Northern Korea is well known. In less than 20 yeare the great district from Pyeng-Yang to the River Yalu has been covered with hundreds of churches. Largely self-supporting. The work is mainly under the direction of a group of American Presbyterian win- isters, doctors, and teachers. No one who has lived in domy touch with these people, as I have, can doubt the gennineress of the propaganda, or the vast left, social and moral. apart frau religions, obtained.
The uccupation of Northern Koren by the Japanese brought up some points of different belween them and the native Christians, The people of the North, whether Christians or not, resented the coming of the Japanese. The mission, aries, although many of the sympathized with that Koreans, were not so foolish as to advocate active ur passive vesistance. They drove political agitators out of their churches. Or at least one occasion, to my knowledge. they prevented serious *pising. They sought for friendly, relations with the Japanese. They preached patirtier and forbearance to their people, As me of comunon reuse and experience and their general work proves them to be that--they knew that it was useless for the Koregins to kick against the pricks.
EL
It became apparent, however, dat some of the Japanese authorities regarded the work 91, the nurthero missionaries. with pici. Their services were cate. fully watch by police spies. Varinus efferts were made. to induce Korean Christians to throw in their lot with the native Churches of Jagan, rather than contine under missionary direction. Quiet but persistent attempts were main- tained to draw children away from the missionary schools,
Suspicion canteed particularly upon a large and prosperans school for the sons of qutive Christians, the Hugh O'Neill Junior Academy at Syen Chyun.
The Principal, the Rev. George B McCume, is a young Pennsylvaning, who has been seven yenes in Korea. He has on evriáin occasions defended Koreans who, he oidered, were being treated mjustly. Last year he gave farther offener in two different ways. He refused to direct his boys tổ how do the picture of the Japanese Emperor, on the ground! that this would be heathenism, "Mikado worship," and would be taken as a re cognition of tie claims to divinity made by the Japanese people for their Em- peror. His fellow missionaries pointed out 10 bit that he was taking up an aloned position, ani in the end Mr. McCam gave way.
Bis segund offence was, to judge from the prominence which has been given to it in subsequent proceedings, still more serious. He gave his students a Bible "talk
