The Report of Mr. F. W. Maze, Com- missioner of Customs, on the trade of Canton in 1911 is just published, and wo tako from it the following interesting ex- crrpts:-
KEVIEW OF TRADE.
The total value of the trade dealt with by the Maritime Customs during the year 1911 amounted
Hk. TIX. 102,324,621, or only 10 per cent. less than that of the previous year-the average yearly value of trade for the five years ended 190 being Hk. Tls. 104,484,425. Both rice crops were poor, and the price of this all-important staple was excep- tionally high throughout the year, but more particularly towards the closo, Exports declined 7 per cent, and in- ports 13 per cent. A noticeable decrease in the former is silk, and a reduction of about 15 per cent. is recorded. Turn-
