In reply to your Excellency's enquiries respecting Mr Sterling, I am bound to state that I had no reason to be otherwise than satisfied with that gentleman's conduct and services during the period of about two years that he passed here as Attorney General from 1844 to 1846. Had he been at his post when the late temporary vacancy occurred, I should not have scrupled to appoint him to the Acting Chief Justiceship; but as the gentleman who then officiated as Attorney General was fully the equal of Mr Sterling in character and talents, I could not do otherwise than avail myself of his services.
