Say Yat-sen and the Awakening of China; By James CastLIE, M.A., M.B., F.1.0.9., and C. SHERIDAN JONES, London: JARKOLB..

No foreigner probably is better qualified "to write a sketch of the life of Dr. Bun Yat-sen than is Dr. James Cantlie, who made his acquaintance in 1887 as stadent in the College of Medicine for Chinese established in Hongkong in October of that year. Sun Yat-sen was the first graduate of that College, which owed its existence to Dr. Cantlie's initiative, and teacher and disciple have **mited can terms of close friendship from that day to this. It was Dr. Cantlie who assisted Sun to creape to Honolulu now nearly twenty years ago after his abortive attempt to capture Canton and its arsenal; it was Dr. Cantlie who again saved the life of Sun Yat-son when he was kidnapped and imprisoned in the Chinese Legation in London, In this book Dr. Canilie tells us something of Sun Yat-sen's labours to promote the Revolution and briefly relates his many hair-breadth escapes from death by violence. Dr. Cantlie's admiration of Sun Yat-sen is unbounded. "I have never known anyone like Sun Yat-sen," he writes, if I were asked to name the most perfect character I ever knew, I would unhesitatingly say Sun Yat-sen. In our house he was the most welcome of visitors; children and servants alike con- ́ceived a deep regard for him; his sweet- ness of disposition, his courtesy, his consideration for others, his interesting cunversation and his gracious demeanour attract one towards him in an indeserih- able fashion, and have led me to think of him as a being apart, consecrated for the work he had in hand.”

There are some interesting revelations in this book, as, for example, that Yuan Shih-kai was a supporter of Dr. Sun's efforts; and aga in that Dr. Sun

· ingratiated himself with the students sent by the Imperial Government to study. in Europe.

"He took advantage of the men sant abroad by the late Emperor, whilst yet be held the veins of Government, to be trained in modern metkocks of Government, and in addition to these the Reform Party supple- I mented the number by nominees of their own. During his visits to Europe and America Sun met these men conferred with them and took them into his counsels. Yoan Shih-kai, when he made up his Cabinet, said it was composed of the best man China posessed, and it is a fact that the highest positions wore given by Yuan to Sun's foreign-educated" "protegés.”

Dr. Cautlis has this to say on the subject of the relations between Yuan
