SIR HIRAM MAXIM'S 'LATEST EFFORT.

A correspondent of the Pall Mall Gazette writes:-

Sir Hiram Maxim's genius for inven- tion and energy are both amazing, Although more than seventy years of age he is to-day working with the vigour and enthusiasm of a young man of twenty on an idea which, if brought to a success- ful fruition, will rank among his greatest triumphs in the realm of science.

He is convinced that it possible to produce an apparatus which will make a disaster-uoh ne that which occurred to the Titanic-absolutely, inexcusable. How the idea came to him is perhaps best told in his own words--spoken as they were to me one night as he sit with closed eyes in an arm-chair in the confortable study at,bis residence in

STOMALIX

"When 1 heard of the dreadfui disaster to the Titanic and its loss with some of Dy dearest friends on board, I was greatly shocked, and I asked myself, Has science reached the end of its tether Can science do anything to pre- vent these terrible disasters, this great lose of life and property and after studying the question for four hours. I made up my mind that it would be pos sible to provide a ship with apparatus that would enable it to detect the pre- sence of any large object in its vicinity, to determine its size, its character, its direction from the ship, and also to measure its distance with a great degree of accuracy. I have been working on the problem ever since.

"We hear much to-day about the eight hours system. Men want a working day of eight hours; some, indeed, want less; but there is nothing now in the eight myself in the State of Maine many years hours system: I worked that system

ago" (Sir Hiram Maxim chuckled with boyish enjoyment at his joke which fol- Jowed), eight hours in the forenoon and eight hours in the afternoon. On this particular job I am still working on the same system. Again he laughed with a hearty gasto, adding, “And I am going

to succeed."

I asked Sir Hiram to give me some details in regard to his iden, but the experience of the past-which has been hitter on occasion-has taught Sir Hiram to be careful.

At the moment, he explained, he must be very careful what he says, although he has, of course, taken the precaution already of protecting himself so far as possible under the Convention, amongst which are England, France, Russia, Ger- many, Australia, Spain, Italy, and the United States.

THE SIXTH SENSE.

"There is no principle involved that I am not already acquainted with, but I discovered about twelve years ago some thing that was not known to others, and that was the organ of the sixth sense. There are certain animals which un- doubtedly are possessed of a sixth sense, which enables them, without seeing, feel: ing, hearing, tasting, or smelling, to detect objects in their vicinity, and to measure with absolute precision their size and distance. That is the idea on which I am working."

His famous questions. "Of what are icebergs composed?" "Did she go down by the bows or the head" "Could the passengers take refuge in the watertight compartments?" and "Is 48dega, aboye or below zero?" are all set out now in the cold dignity of print for the use and information of the Committee on Com merce of the United States Senate.

Here are some typical extracts from, the examination

Are they intended as a refuge ?—In no way, sir,

He took me to his workroom, and showed me his handiwork with pardon- able price. He showed me a magnificent case of drawing instruments, which, though they have been in constant use for thirty years, look almost brand new. "It was with these instruments," he quietly remarked, as he closed the ease,

that I designed the Maxin gun."

All the other Pro- vinges in China are plainly waiting to see what measure of success will attend the audacious efforts of the authorities in Chekiang to set the provisions of the Anglo-Chinese Opium Agreement at de- fiance and how much protection the foreign merchants whose interests are the threatened by the illegal procedure in province will receive from their own Gov- ernment, and we earnestly trust that these representations, which we are making jointly with the two Banks most largely interested in the business, will be favour- nbly viewed by Your Excellency.
