The evening dress of the moment is very lovely, and there are one or two places in London where the initiated know that they can on any occasion have a full view of the lovelicat frocks of the moment. A tall and slender woman the other night was wearing a very lovely gown of thick and rich black satin. The top of the bodice was softched with a searf of very beautiful creamy lave, fine and weblike. A band of black velvet, worn high round the neck, is thoroughly fixed in fashionable favour, particularly

From the black velvet round her throat hung á pendant consisting of one penr- shaped pearl. Her sister, older by a year, and yet with all the charm of the "fapper" visible beneath her conscious composure, wore a charming frock of pale blue and while striped chiffon, made with irresponsible little frills bursting out of it here and there as though its wearer's high spirits were typified. There was a slightly panier effect about the skirt, attained by a ruche of the same stuff just below the knees, which caught the skirt into a little bunch above it. The fair hair was tied with blue and silver gauze, and the Marie Antoinette band of velvet was diversified with a little diamond slide.

Although the craze for veiled frocks has unfortunately died out, the beauty of the effects only to be obtained in this way has been recognised, and is retained is trimmings Thus a lovely frock of pale blue and silver-shut gauze, made in almost Marie Antoinette style, over a petticoat of fine deep-tinted lace, has a fehir of mauve, blue and pink chiffon, most softly arranged and skilfully intermingled. It is edged with the coffee-tinted lace, and a narrow line of black velvet ribbon, where lace meets fichu, matches a bow of black velvet on the lace petticoat.

FOR THOSE WHO WEAK RED. Another lovely gown was of red crêpe with a large brocaded design in gold- one of those dozigas which are all over the place, and yet are elusive. The gown was made semi-loose, and continued into a pointed train. On the shoulders it was cut in a V. That was all. Here again there were no irrelevant trimmings, and no lines interrupted for the sake of eramuing on another piece of visible expense. In the last few years, since the revival of brocades brought into being a great number of exquisite new materials, it has been most irritating to note the way in which a fabric which ought to be left to itself has been fussed and hustled into companionship with ribbons and laces and ruches and waist bands, and all kinds of elaborations in a manner which showed how very little the and how wearer cared for beauty, strongly she preferred vulgarity,
THE NEW HUNSHADES.
Last year the fashionable sunshade was very small, and had a high dome copied from the mid-Victorian parasol. The year before that it was not quite so small;| and was fringed, and, in fact, formed an excellent reproduction of the little early Victorian folding toys which were seen in the barouches of the genteel.
