Salary £. 300. The enclosed documents will corroborate my own recommendation. On the other hand I have to recommend that a saving of about £.500 per annum be effected by causing all future brick Works to be executed by the Surveyor General, without any aid from the Ordnance Department. When Despatch Nr. 116 of 1845 was written, the early exigencies of the Colony, called for an amount of works which were far beyond the power of the Surveyor General's Establishment, but as little now remains to be built except the Governor's own residence, the Civil Department of Works is fully equal to all exigencies, even though I have abolished the Office of Deputy Surveyor General. An amount of £511, paid during the last year to the Ordnance Department, may be thereby saved.
