to which Mr. Miles is entitled during his absence: A certificate of the last date of payment, is
annexed.

I have to acknowledge

on this subject. I scarcely know what to make of it, so much reporting that
it is difficult to understand.
I read it at first as meaning that the £100 granted to Mr.
Miles is to be considered
as an advance of half Salary.

third Clerk in the Colonial Secretary's office at Hong Kong, to enable him to defray
the expense of his passage
