I read it at first as meaning that the £100 granted to Mr.

Miles is to be considered

as an advance of half Salary.

I have granted £100 to Mr. Miles, the

third Clerk in the Colonial Secretary's office at Hong Kong, to enable him to defray

the expense of his passage

to this Colony, under the circumstances
