FROM PEKING TO PARIS: BY AEROPLANE.

PAnis, April 9th.

The Matin, which some years ago or- ganised the Peking to Paris motor ride, which was won by Prince Borghese, now proposes nothing less than a light from Peking to Paria by aeroplane, which it con. siders has become possible after the re- markable performances of aviation during the last twelve months. If avintora, it argues, can fly from Paris to Madrid and Paria to Rome, and cross European moun- tain ranges, they will be able to fly across the continents of Europe and Asia. It is merely a question of more elaborate pre- paration and of grestor endurance on the part of the men and the machines. The physical difficulties remain the same, and can easily be overcome.

The distanco is about 7,500 miles, and, aa aviators have already done from 500 to

600 miles a day, it is only a question of COMPLETE

flying over similar stages a requisite num- ber of times to cover the distance between Poking and Paris. The Matin assumes that the flight will be undertaken and success- fully accomplished by a Frenchman, and rive another proof of native ability and endurance

M. ALERIOT'S VIEW.

I asked M. Blériot for his opinion on the subject, and he readily told me that he saw no impossibility in the undertaking. ile said: "It might be more reasonable, perhaps, to propose a flight from St

Paris. I cannot say that it is impossible. We can de almost anything to-day with aeroplanes, except dy scross the wide ocean, for the simple reason that on the ocean we can establish no relay points. On land we can do almost anything, we like, as long as we can establish points for revictualling men and machines.

"We can cover any distance. It is quite true that some of our champion aviatore have made flights of 300 or 600 miles a day, but, of course, it is quite another question to repeat such long-distance flights day after day, or even with intervals

for rest. I think the reasonable distance

which would not fatigue an aviator too much would be something like 500 miles a day. Even that, if it is continued for a great number of days, in already a splendid achievement.

"I have not yet heard anything about the scheme, but I have no doubt that it can be done. There would, of course, have to be a good prize affered to tempt competitors, and I doubt if £20,000, which I suggest myself, would be enough. There can be no question as to the endurance of the motors and the wings. There are many aeroplanes which have made flights that aggregate 5,000 or 6,000 miles or more with the same motor, and og far as the mechanical side is concerned, the flight, from Peking to Paris is as feasible now as it would be twenty years hence."

The Matin, however, does not consider

the expense as a drawback. It announces that it will propose a prize worthy of the undertaking.

DIFFICULT PROBLEMS.

I asked the opinion also of the director of the Compagnie Adrienne, in the Avenue de l'Opéra, and he said that he also thought it possible from an abstract point of view. It is different if we come to the concrete, as it were,' he said. "It

is easy to fly the difficulty is the landing. How are the landing-stages to be fixed, and will the aviators always be able to detect thern ? The woather also may mike it impracticable, but if the flight is to be accomplished I think it will be by other machines than those now in use, You will see an entire revolution in aero- planes within a year or less, The aero- planes now in use are astounding in a way, and have reached the limit of perfec tion, but something better will have to be found, and I think it has already been found. The rotative wing which we are trying to introduce, and which is already working at Issy-les-Moulineaux on a nun- ber of aeroplanes, is opening up a new field in aviation. Before a year

up you

will see everything changed; and then the flight from Peking to Paris will be much simplified."

Mr. Sloan, of Sloan & Co., whom 1 also saw, is of the same opinion, and wonders are expected of the new rotative wing, which is being tested Issy-les-

at Moulineaux, and which, according to then, throws every other improvement into the shade. The Peking-to-Paris flight is not, therefore, as chimerical as it might seem at first sight, and, indeed, M. Charles Roux,

of the Cie. Adrienne, assured me that "before long wë shall be flying across the sens.'

"DESERVED HIS LUCK."

CAPTAIN SCOTT ON AMUNDSEN'S DASH TO.

THE POLE.

The Central News correspondent at Christchurch, New Zealand, wired on the 4th inst.:---

I have been authorised to make public the following interesting extracts from a private letter written by Captain Scott on October 28th, that is to say, practically ou the eve of his departure south.

This letter, which, of course, was not penned with a view to publication, indi- cates very clearly that Captain Scott never had any intention of racing Captain Amundsen to the Pole. Captain Scott BATE:

We shall leave for the south with high hopes of accomplishing our object, despite the reverses of last season, but there is a chance that we may not catch the ship," and we have decided to arrange for her return in 1913.

"I am fully alive to the complication in the situation arising out of Amundsen's presence in the Antarctic, but as any at- tempt at a race might have been fatal to our chance of getting to the Pole at all, I decided long ago to do exactly as I should have done had Amundsen not been bere.

"If he gets to the Pole be will be bound. to do it rapidly with dogs, and one fore- Any- sees that success will justify him.. way he is taking a big ris) and if he gets through he will have deser zed his luck

"Meanwhile you may be sure that we are doing the best we can to carry out our plans."
