AMUNDSEN AND SYMELF.

SOME COMPARISONS OF OUR

ADVENTURES,

[BY BIR ERNEST, SHACKELSTON IN THE "DALLY CHRONICLE"]

THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 3RD, 1912.

Amundsen's further cable to. The Chronicle gives more details of human interest than could be gathered from his first long official message. He says that no traces whatever wore seen that Scott had reached the Pole before, but, wisely says that it is quite possible, that he may have been there, and that bad weather might have destroyed his memorial; which would most likely be a snow mound:

I note that he thinks that calm weather is the prevalent condition at the Pole. This is quite different to what we experi- enced and concluded to be the general case during our Southern march. During the whole of that march on the plateau we Buffered greatly from strong head winds. What a blizzard means in a latitude such.

Amundsen points out that his remark able speed was by marching six hours, then spending two hours tending to dogs and feeding, then six hours' rest, and then another march. It is evident that he mast have been driving the dogs, and that the men were not engaged in hauling the sledges themselves, and in this he is fortunate.

During the 120 days of our Southern journey, for the first 33 days we pulled beside the ponies. Then when all the ponies were gone and there was only man haulage left, for the last 97 days we dragged the sledges ourselves. Ten houre a day on the seantiest rations produced ravenous appetites, with nought gave a little tough pony ment, a couple of hiscuits and four lumps of sugar to satisfy the pangs of huger.

In view of Amundsen's fortunate cir- cumstances, I recall that I wrote as follows just after the Southern journey :- "We brought back with us from the journey towards the Pole vivid memories of how it feels to be intensely fiercely hungry.

1908, to February 23rd, 1909, we had but one full meal, and that was on Christmas Day. Even then we did not keep the sense of repletion for very long, for within an hour or two it seemed to us that we were a hungry as ever. Our daily allowanca of food would have been a small one for a city worker in a temperate climate, and in our case hunger was increased by the fact that we were performing vigorous physical labour in a very low tempera- ture."

Amundsen states that his greatest diffi- culties were the heights encountered, und that be reached an elevation of 18,750 feet. There may be some telegraphic error here, in the cable, for to reach this enormous Altitude he must have gone right over the mountains, and also found the highest mountain in the South Polar regions. In his original cable Amundsen states that 10,750 feet was the highest he had reached, and this is a much more likely figure.

He found that the Pole itself is at an altitude of 10,800ft. When we stopped at 97 miles from the Pole our altitude was 10,050ft., and the plateau was slowly rising at the rate of about 800ft. for every 100 miles. So it appears that the observa- tions of both expeditions seem to coincide.

I presume here that Amundsen has corrected his altitudes with reference to his base camp at the Bay of Whales, because we had to reduce our altitude by hypsometer measurement by over a thou- sand feet, and if corrected our approxi

operations. The only experience we had of these was when Adams, one of the Southern party, suffered badly from tooth- ache. Marshall, our surgeon and carto- grapher, decided to operate. Unfor tunately we had only a left-handed forceps with us. I waited outside the tent while the operation was in progress. I saw a great deal of bulging of the tent and heard a lot of language not fit for publication. Marshall came out excited but unsuccess ful.

Working at such low temperatures st high altitudes, one well-knows from exparience, is very trying. Amundsen was fortunate in being able to take suffi- cient provisions throughout his journey, so that he and his comrades were not I note that Beriously inconvenienced. they had to resort eventually to eating dog, and it certainly requires an Antarctic appetito to consider dog a "delicious" food.

Lack of food is most trying, especially at such high altitudes and with such low temperature. Everybody needs, not only sufficient food to keep the body tempera ture up. but also to supply the muscle wastage under strenuous working condi-

tions.
