A LUMINOUS FIRE ALARM,
THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS, BATURDAY, MARCH 16, 19
A new alarm indicator for fire-engine "stations has three panes,. behind, which incandescent lamps can be so arranged se to show the signaling box by numeral or special signs. To save the tima neces- sary for finding on a chart the spot from which the alarm was sent, it is proposed to use a translucent map that would be illuminated by the alarm, and would have all boxes of the fire department area marked by numbered discs. The call would also show a red light behind the dise for the signaling box and another for the station, so that the best route to the fire would be seen at a glance.
PIPER FOR DRINKING WATER. The use of lead pipes for conveying drinking water is being regarded with some disfavour by Paris health authori-. tian. Dependence has been placed on the formation of lead sulphate and lead car bonate on the surface, preventing any dis- solving of lead in the water, but further investigation shows that the protective coating is long in forming and is easily displaced by a shock, such as water-ham- mer action. Copper pipe is recommended, as the copper salta likely to be dissolved in the water are slightly, if any, harmful, Copper is expensive, however, and another suggestion is the use of aluminum Pipe

FOOD IN FISHES TE UNUSED. The flesh of whales and certain fisher- including sharks-contains much nutritive matter, but for various reasons has been rejected as food, and until recently has received little attention. It has been utilized in some factories in Northern Europe, however, extracts or pastes being prepared and put up in glass jars. - The. manufacture eliminates all objectionable qualities, fishy favour being destroyed by chemical processes, and the fat that ren- ders whale most unpalatable being to- moved. The extracts have the con sistency of syrup. They are much cheaper than beef extracts, and are well adapted te various purposes in cookery. Another waste-fish product of Norwegian factories is a kind of fish-meal, that has come into. considerable use as a food material in the region near its source.

In this way every move- ment of the most timid fish can be watched without disturbing its natural conditions, and a photograph of any new or interest- ing phase of acquatic home life can "be made in the two-hundredth of a second or less.
REBING AS THE COLOUR-BLIND DO-
To persons with normal vision the diff- culties and sensations of the colour-blind have a very vague meaning. The usual form of colour-blindness is inability to perceive red, and to give a better appre- ciation of this defect a Glasgow optician is making special green spectacles with a series of coloured wools. The spectacles shut out all red rays. The wearer sees coloured objects as they appear to most colour-blind persons, and matches scarlet wool with black, yellow with green, pink with light blue, and crimson with dark blue.
NOVEL BOUNDING.
A novel shallow water indicator for ships depends upon the varying compres slon of air at different depths in the water line of 300 feet of 1-inch armoured rubber hose is trailed beneath the vessel, and air is pumped through from a compresser and reservoir.A gange in the pilot house is connected to the reservoir. The pressure indicated varies to correspond to the depth of the free end of the tube, and the instrument is so calibrated that the depth in feet is read directly. With a speed of twelve: knots, the tube rises so that its lower end in about sixty feet below the surface, greater depths being indicated us sixty feet with no botton. As the tube is raised on a shallowing bottom, an electric alarmi is sounded at a predetermined depth, thus automatically calling attention to the danger ahead. The apparatus has been successfully tested on some Canadian lake
LIGHTNING TIPPED MASTS A mysterious flare of light is directed skyward in some recent photographs of herring boats at St. Albs, Scotland. The phenomenon le traced on a number of pictures, but in all cases the luminosity rises from masts and spar, Defects of the camera or the use of a developing tank. can hardly have been adequate cause. There is evident connection with the maasta of the vessels, and the air was in such a condition of electrical disturbance at the time that it is believed that elec trical discharges are the true explana- tion.
•NOT A LOST ART.
The tempering of copper, one of the most striking of the alleged lost arts of ancient civilization, has been shown by recent researches to be a myth. In Mexico no trace of such an art is found among the remains of the Aztecs and Tolteus, and very superior cutting tools of the Balsas River ruine prove to be not copper but an alloy. Analysis shows that, the hardness is due to nickel and cobalt in the copper Home ores of the ancient metallurgists contained these metals, and the dres that supplied pure copper gave only soft implements
