FASHIONS AND FAYOI03,

AN EXTRAORDINARY NOVELTY. “Something new ! Something now 1"--- that is the constant cry of the modern smart woman, as it was of the Athenians of old. What would any sane person think of a hood grotesquely inadequate to the proper duty of sheltering the head when shelter is needed, a hood which stretches down below the waist in oblong form? Yot this is the supplement of some of the modern outdoor coata, There is enough material in this hood to make it a covering for not only head but hat, yet the fact that it is sewn firmly down to the body of the garment, a few inches below the waist, renders it impossible to apply it to this purpose. The ordinary hood, which is kept perfectly fint between tho shoulders, and ends in a dainty little tassel above the waist, is by no means ugly, taking away from the unfinished look of some of the fashionable coats.

It is an indispensable part of the burnous, whose popularity, however, appears to have waned within the last few months.

... THE EVENING CONT.

Even more extravagant and costly than last year's are the garmanta now preferred for evening wear. Aimw seen at the Opera houses.of late may illustrate this fact. Many were of the most clalorato Chinese embroidery on silk, some of them "converted" from the garments when hy the priests in the temple. Exquisite, in- deed, are the colours in some of these, one, in marine blue in a deep share of se phire, is embroidered with birde, whcsa extended wings show almost every colour of the rainbow... These birds rest, on russet-coloured branches and

twiagra

on which old-rose almond blossoms ara embroidered, and the spaces between are occupied by butterflies in full fight, em- broidered in natural colours.

This gar-

ment is finished at the neck with revers of beautiful Alencon lace, which extends at the back into a short hood, lined with gold tinsel and finished with a gold bullion tassel. The coat is lined with gold tinsel. Another opera cost has a deep yoke-and- sleeves all in one, carried out in pansys purple chiffon velvet. Into this is gather- od, rather fully, paleat green chiffon, through which pansy-purple lustrous silk shines. The fulness is caught in very closely round the knees, and again above the feet, into two bands of oxydised lace. The cuffs are composed of similar lace, and the sleeves are fulled into them. From the lower band of lace falls a fringe of oxydised silver. The neck is finished with a rather narrow edging of chinchilla. WHAT ARE OUR PEET TO WEAR?

The question of smart shoes and stock- ings is one that invariably crops up in the beginning of the season. Almost for- gotten are the old days, when nobody ever dreamed of wearing any but black boots and shoes and black stockings. These latter continue to predominate, and it is only sexagenarians who remember the days when white stockings were universal- ly worn, contrasting sharply with black shoet. On plump fect the white chaus sure had a boiling-over effect which was extremely ugly, especially when the owner of the feet had sufficient vanity induce her to wear a smaller size than really fitted her foot. A goodly proportion of our 80x appears to have shared in this special form of vanity in Mid-Victorian days. Perhaps some remnant of it may have continued until the present moment. Shoemakers could tell tales.

SHOE VERHUS BOOT.

It is about twenty years since the hot began to fall into disfavour, and to be re- placed by the akce. Bootmakers would tell us how their customers, two decades since, began to complain of the impediment that the boot placed upon free motion, tighten ing in the veins and muscles above the ankle. At that period of sartorial his- tory girls were beginning to enjoy the out door life, which was such a wholesome and agreeable change from sitting at home leaning over the embroidery frame, and otherwise injuring their health. By de grees the shoe almost entirely usurped the place of the boot, and it is a singular cir cumstance that this ulter is now patronised chiefly by two very different, classes of society, the highest and that humbler stratum which includes farmers' wives and women shopkeepers, &c. This season will see not only a great alteration in colour for the outdoor shoe, but a really artistic and admirable change for the bet ter in the ballroom and indoor chaussure Take, for instance, a gown of the sheeniest and most diaphanous silk muslin or chif for, and the asthetic dressmaker will add a note of gold on the bodice, a touch of the same on the sleeves, and will enjoin upon her customer that she must wear gold shoes and gold-coloured stockings in order to produce the full effect of this sup- plementary touch. With a very pale green soft silk ball stress worn at a recent dance, the shoes and stockings of hedge- rose pink added a delightful touch. On the gown itself were two large pink roses, one at the waist, another near the hem. The whole effect was excellent, and was in no wise spoiled by the fact that the wearer was a very picturesque, dark-haired girl, slim and graceful.

AT THE THEATRE. Miss Constance Drever wears very be- coming headgear at the Lyric Theatre; in one instance a very, wide-brimmed velvet hat, the trimming composed of a large and bandsome black feather, and a similar white feather. Her toque is really a cir cular cap in black fur, bound with a gold wreath which rests upon the hair. It is ontiraly becoming. A kind of Mercury beadgear is worn at the Paris Variété. The toque itself is made of feathers, and the wings are yellow. That on the right almost touches the shoulder of the pretty woman who wears it; the other forms a swan-like curve in the air, and is calculat ed to incommode any very tall person standing near. The Napoleon hat, which has become so burlesque this season, is worn at the same theatre in a-much modi fied form. The brim is turned up all round, in a very wide curve back and front, and a quite narrow one at the points. The hair is just visible on the temples and over the ears under it. D other toque, suitable for everyday wear, in in green velvet trimmed with grey fox all round the brim, a small ostrich tip rising at the left side. We are supposed to know nothing about the new hata until Easter,

CLARKE'S

Baby bodices are in again. As a matter of fact they have never quite gone out, but they are among the special fashions of the moment, lending themselves to the very diaphanous materials sometimes word. One of these dresses is in Nile water muslin, forming the gathered bodice, the short sleeves and the tunic, which extends to the knees and is gather- ed in very closely under a garland of tiny pink roses and their leaves. -A similar garland finishes the bodice round the shoulders, and is carried on round the tops of the sleeves, which fall low on the arm, this being a great novelty for the present season, when the diagonal line from the shoulders reigns almost supreme. bodice is held up in this instance by bands of black satin watching the narrow belt. The front of the waist is in the normal position, but the belt rises an inch or two at the back. A very pretty evening dress is in pale old-rese silk muslin over white silk, & wide band of black satin trimming the skirt some quarter of a yard above the hem. At the waist the silk muslin divides into curves, narrowing towards the shoulder, where they fasten with a kast of small pink roses, a large knot of. roses being worn on the left side of the waist. The front and sleeves are compos. ed of gathered tulle, finished quite plainly without lace or tucker. It may be men tioned that evening dresses are not very tion to— décolleté just now, whatever they may become later.--X AND Z, in the Globe. 750]
