THE HUMOUR OF THE GAME

At this blank and depressing season of the drearily on the subject of golfing jokes He year the golfer da sometimes driven to wonder

whether they meant to amuse him or only those who do not play golf. Io also wonders whether they have in fast socceded in amusing anybody at all.

At 3 o'clock this afternoon, the President and Cabinet proceeded to the National As-wonders as to the intentions of their perpetraters sembly formally to tender their resignation and recommended most strongly the election of Yuan Shil-kai to the presidency.

The Chairman of the Assembly eulogized the services renilered to the country by Pre- sident Sun, saying that it was such an ex- ample of self-sacrifice and purity, of purpose as was unparalleled in history and it was solely thre to his magnanimity and modesty that the North had been won.

The speech evoked much applause and loud cheers. The Assembly reluctantly re- solved to accept the resignation of President Sun, provided that he and the Cabinet would continue to discharge their functions for the Republic until the new President was elected and assumed office.

The election of the new President takes place at 2 p.m. to-morrow.

YUAN SUH-KAI'S TELEGRAM.

The follows Yuan Shib-kai's telegram to Dr. Sun and others. This has already been given in our columns but is reproduced partly for continuity's sake, partly because the official version differs in some slight par ticulary from that already published.

To President Sun, the National Assembly, the Ministers of the Cabinet, Nanking, Vice- President Li Wuchang

The golding joker bas during the last 20 years had something more than his fair chance. There was a time when the game was so strange, and therefore so ridiculous, that a picture of a stent elderly gentleman armed with a weapon bearing a faint resemblance to a bookey stick was deemed anfficiently entertaining. It in addition the staat gentlemen was struck by a ball misdirected by another gentleman and the whole scene was shown in " companion" platures,
