The theory of life and death may be upset by extraordinary experiments now being carried on by Dr. Alexis Carrel, the French sayant of the Rockfoller Institute of New York, who is the pioneer of human grafting, Professor Pozzi, a prominent Paris surgeon, presented to the Academy of Medicine, a detailed account of Dr. Carrel's latest re- searches, which have proved that tissues may be cultivated apart from the organism, The lecture produced a deep impression. Dr. Carrel ascertained that fragments of tissue placed in an organic liquid at a suitable temperature continue to develop during a -certain time, after which growth diminishes and finally cases, the issue then dying. NEW The period of development lasts from two to fifteen days. He sought to discover whether the life of the tissues could not be prolonged by transferring then to new surroundings. He placed cultivations of tissues taken from the skin, heart, and muscles, after washing them for a few minutes in a so-called Ringer

they immediately began to rapidly. By means of repeated washings and NEW transferences they were kept in a state of full activity for over a month. Many cells NEW which had undergone eighteen transferences were still active more than two months after the removal of the primitive fragments of the animal's body. The longest period of life observed was sixty-one days.

100 YEARS WITHOUT A DOCTOR. Proudly claiming to be England's oldest sportsman, Mr. William Harris Inglesant celebrated on the 12th ult, his 1st birthday in his old house, the Quarndon, Laughi borough. Although for the last three months he has not been able to leave his bed there is not a more cheerful or a happier man' in Leicestershire.. I have never had tootli ache," he told an interviewer, and until

my legs began to give way fast year 1 did not know what it was to have a doctor near F Even now I wish the doctor would keep away, 1 do not believe in doctors. I never need a dose of medicine."

- THE GUTTA-PERCHA, TRRE. On account of the extreme usefulness of guttapercha in constructing submarine cables, every effort is being made to save the tree that yiekis the valuable gum from destruction. No satisfactory substitute for gutta-percha found in the forests of the Malay Peninsula and in Malneca has been discovered, but the natives, in order to get quick returns, are destroying the trees so rapidly that a gutta-percha famine is feared. To prevent this, the French, Dutch, and British Governments are striving not only to stop the waste of the trees already exist. ing, but to increase their number by trans- plantation and cultivation. Experiments with temsplanted trees are being made in Réunion and Madagascar.

filtered water. The knowledge of this fact might be of great service in an emergency. Mr. Yapp also discovered, on his last visit, two species of ferns, growing on trees, whose thick, fleshy stems are filled with galleries funneled by ants, the ferns, thus forming

living nests for the ants.

THE LIEUTENANT, THE GUNNER, AND THE WATCHMAKER,

A Paris contemporary publishes an amus- ing story from Egypt. At one of the milltary posts it is the custom to fire a canson at. noon. Just after the arrival of a new Beutenant he was going round one day just about noon. "How do you know the correct time for firing?" he aslied the gunner, "I look at my watch, sir," was the reply. "I have it regulated once a month by the watch- maker in the adjacent village, a Swiss, who has been here for some years." A few days later the lieutenant found himself in the village about noon, and outside the watch maker's shop. The Swiss was in the street, evidently waiting for something to turn up, so the lieutenant had a chat with him.

suppose, said the officer, "you have but Stile work here?" "Not much," was thei response. I have more leisure than work, but this is not without advantages. You see, I am now listening for the midday gun." "The midday gun-what for?" "I re- gulate all my watches and clocks by that."

ON ST. ANDREW'S LINKS.

At St. Andrew's last month a visiter who had performed respectably on the links on the previous Friday and Saturday seemed to be completely out of sympathy with every club that he handled. After a hole or two he felt that some apology was due to his aged caddie "Dear me," he said fusing the goffer's pronunciation of the words "Dear me"), "I can't play for nuts this morning. You see, Alexander, I sat up very late last night." To this (we learn from the Glasgori Herald) Alexander replied, stolidly and quite respectfully, Aye, sir: A wis ger fu' last nicht masel,"

INDENTURED LABOUR IN BRITISH NORTH BORNEO.

At a recent meeting of the British North Berneo Chamber of Commerca Mr. Asto· gave! a brief outline of the meeting he and Mr. Darby bad bad with His Excellency the Governor sud stated that all the questions that had been brought up at different timen were thoroughly discussed and that Hia Excellency was in full sympathy with oll that was expressed, and promised to put full details before Sir West Ridgowy. With regard to Estates sending to Chios Mandores to recruit their friends up to and bring them down a freeman, His Excel- Joy was in favour of issuing a Proclamation to the effect that all such endlies so recruited should be forced to work with the Estate that had paid their passage down for at least three months after arrival in the country

THE PORTUGUESE COLONIES.

STATEMENT BY THE LEGATION IN LONDON. The Porturado Legation in London states that the rumour circulated by the Proms that Portugal wants to dispose of any of her colonies le absolutely false. The declaration of the Prime Minister snd Minister for Foreign Affairs to the Senate, on the 18th last, that "the foreign policy of Portugal will be continued the basis of the alliance with Great Britain, and. in consequence the colonisLpolicy will be deve- loped in harmony with that alliance," is an evi- dent proof of the fact. On the contrary, the Government of the Republic, with the decided intention of developing the Portuguese solenica, especially those in Africa, is now assisting in the organization of a new important Colonial Bonk solely created for this purpose.
