THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS, TOFSDAY, FEBRUARY 13TH, 1912.
Á HARROWING REPORT, Fou men derd of starvation in fifty-five homes visited, only one family in eight with any rice of grain, the rest living on sweet- potato leaves, carrot tops, and clm bark, nd four months yet to harvest-such is the report of Ms. Earl H. Cressy, who was sent by The Central China Famine Relief Com- mitive to ascertain present conditions in a portion of the famine aren. His report in full is as folow:
It was though best to investigate as closely as possible a limited area which might be taken as typical, and for this purpose thei Township of Lu Pi was selected. It is fifty- five forth by east from Tsing' Kiang Pu in the northern part of the province of Kinagsu.
The township of Lu Pi extends sixteen li front north to south, is seventeen from east to west, and thus contains roughly wenty-five English square miles. In it dwell 2,700 familles, aggregating 14,000 individuals, so that the population is over 1500 to the square mile. This sample famine distries contains about one half of one per reat of the total area and population now famine striṭken in China.
Several neighbouring villages were: examined in each of two widely separated groups, taking every house large or small, in all fifty-five homes, and there is no reason to believe that they are net representative of

The method followed was to assemble the STHURSDAY, family and count and question them, and then thoroughly to examine every part of the house-looking into the cooking vessels on the stove to see what was in preparation, and then using an electric flash-light to go through all baskets, jars and boxes where food was likely to be kept. These were all country people who seldom have money on fund, so that the supply of food aially & in the premises is a good indications of their condition. About one out of every three were Pating em bark, which they prepare by reducing it to a fine sawdust and then making it into cakes. Whole rows of trers have ten thus stripped of other bark. Of even stich sorry food as this, unly a few have any great anion on hand. After it is gone, they will eat the bark of the willow and mulberry, which cause swelling and hasten death, fixcept for these the country side is absolutely bare.

but one fair crap in the last five years. Five! years ago was a big faming. A good year frdlowe, but this. is the third year of famine sime then. Last year they sold their work] animis, so that except dogs, among the fifty-d homes visited, the only animals found were two calves and one chicken,
Household utensils have also been sold, and in some cases the timbers of a part of the rof the rest of the house is made of mand chath.. I found the average holding of land to be twelve mow (about two English acres), the largest fifty mow and the smallest three. Questioning showed that the average crop this year among the familie visited was four Chinese bushels per family. Last year's crop was only double this. The cause of famine is lack of drain- age, so that the rainfall, which is as great as i tu 30inches in the weeks, simply stands, and rows our the crops. I went over tha ground with Mr. C. D.. Jauson, the engineer sy out by the American Red Cross Society, who gave his approval to a simple plan of drainage proposed by the local com mitter, by which it will be possible to pre vent another famine in this township,
Last year in spite of the fact that in this township the Fantine Relief Commitee) carried 65 families through the season, and the Chinese Government gave 1,800 families | enough to last them about a month, 100 persons, at a very conservative estimate, died j of starvation, and twenty children and six or eight wires were sold. Children brough from one to three dollars. Mexican and wives about, ter times as much. The object in: such sales was as much to provide for the one sold as to secure, lood for the seller, and the sale was not always into life of vice. This year two persons out of every three are certain of death unless help comes from outside, while the rust in suffering is simply incalculable. In the fty-five homes visited four dead men were found," and many more who were in the kast stages,

ROTARY -
DUPLICATOR.
Has achieveil a succese unequalled by any other 'Rotary-Duplicator. This is due to simplicity of working and the excellence of fitting of the parts. It has cansel a complete revolation in Duplicating, and the production of perfect copies by the Rotary Machine is nor a certainty.
From a well written original any boy can make thousands of copies on any paper, and each one will be perfect.
There is absolutely nothing to go out of order, and the apparatus is always ready for nie. There is a mechanical device which allows the copy to be made in any position on the paper.
The pressure roller is regulated by a simple lover, and the arrangement is so made that it is impossible for the operator to have difficulty with his work.
The printing oglindor is geared so that one tarn of the handle makes a copy..
A most important advantage ELLAMSB 19" posmossas is that the ink nevor drips and runs all over the Duplicator as on other Machinos.
The ink never dries on the rollers ar pads, and copies can be made oppany kind of paper,” Moreover, this ink does not stain the hands in any way.
There is no peculiar or complicated fastening of the stencil-sheet to the Duplicator. The ELLAMS 819" Duplicator is so absolutely simple that it requires no experienes whatever to produce perfect sopics from it-there is no calculating or anscrewing of parts.
The Machine is fitted with an automatis Copy-counter recording instantly the tetal number of copies taken.
We stock three different kinds of this Duplicator
1. For duplicating typewritten documents
2. For duplicating both type and handwrition documents
3. For duplicating both typo sad handwritten documents with self-
